    Good evening everyone :hello:

Ah, the weekend. How I love you, lovely weekend. Not much done here, other than visiting the brand new Caffe Nero in town (DH paid :D) and having a mooch around the market.

So, my pleasures for the day:

    1) HM Carrot and leek soup for lunch from the freezer.

    2) As February is one of the two months when our council tax direct debit doesn't go out, we've used it to donate to one of the charities supporting farmers and communities in Somerset.

    3) Done some shredding of sensitive paperwork. Feeling virtuous! :A

    4) A few loads of washing done. Just waiting for it to all dry.

    5) Chinese takeaway for supper tonight. We haven't had one for ages, not have we eaten out for ages. So, my justification for getting one is that we can use the empty boxes for freezing HM food. :rotfl:

Right, DH on his way back with the takeaway. Better go and look as though I've done something. :D

Hello BB, nice to meet you - and I love the fact I'm no longer alone in calling certain people "gentleman callers"!! (Currently I am without, but will definitely revive the phrase if, as and when circumstances allow :);) )

    VickyA - what a great gift x

    1. DD and I spent a pleasant morning cuddling and nattering in my bed, then doing our homework together :)

    2. The poet was FABULOUS :) DD was enthralled :)

    3. We popped along the road to peep at my old secondary school, where I hope she will also go in a couple of years' time.

    4. Managed to get parking right outside the theatre this afternoon :)

    5. Dropped her off to watch a film with some friends and have come home to do more work.....or procrastinating, I can't remember which is more important!

    6. I've got one of my files to be handed in up to date :) Phew! Need to check another, but hopefully it's also as good as it can be, and then tackle the maths file.

Evening all, from a thoroughly miserable CCP - Isis has been showing signs of being unwell all day, and my attempts at getting her into her carrying box to get veterinary help have resulted only in a terrified Isis and a thoroughly scratched CCP. :( I'll just have to hope she recovers by herself, and eventually forgives me for chasing her around with a box.

Anyway, some pleasures from before everything went pear-shaped:

    1) Managed to get out in the garden between downpours and rescued a couple of daffodils which had been snapped off by the wind, and they're now brightening up the place in a vase.

    2) Got a decent amount of studying done.

    3) Watched lots of ice skating, my half-formed intention to boycott these Olympics lasting less than a day. :o

    4) Reading a very good book which I picked up from the free-to-a-good-home shelf at work: it's set in Tudor Portsmouth, which is quite interesting.

    5) I'm now going to go and soothe my cat-frayed nerves, and numb the pain in my scratched hands, with a glass of wine.

I'll see you all tomorrow, when hopefully things will look much brighter than they do at the moment.
Back after a very long break!

Not-quite-AWOL means I have been lax in keeping up. So I'll read but only reply to some of the last few days!

kexlou - welcome! Belated, but "a hot mug of tea, tori amos on the background and a good book" - you're in the right place!
Patchwork Quilt - welcome! Belated, again - I'm sorry! You had *any* Christmas chocolates left?! <Awe!> And a CS cashmere - canny find & a joy to wear! Was given some Wool for kindle - must read it! Wrinkly Veg soup both very OS & delicious! Good hits at the CS!
Skint yet again - DS heading for South Africa? Remind him to avoid local valentines customs...? (I learned snorkers from Wogan...)
Ampersand - delighted to split the concessions take - splendid match! Hurrah for ongoing existence of would be performers of knightly deeds even if chap with tractor is the actual solution. May the medics be as effective and less destructive. Welcome back to the land of the two handed and muttering about it!
kittikins - so glad your lovely tutor reminded you gently that part of learning is learning to ask! All the very best with the teaching application. I think out in the other world libraries let grownups borrow 20 books at once too, but they charge fines. Sign daughter up... Hope both of you have a ball at Oxford Literary Festival! Parents evening prep - well done! All the best with assignment & applications! Great to hear both you & daughter powering upwards academically! Well done returning Posh Bag, too. Parking right outside theatre? Miracles happen!
lovefullshelves - six meals from six slices of bacon - how? My three gannets regard 6 slices between them as a light snack, once supplemented with half a loaf, any "spare" (as in not currently in use) eggs and anything else to hand...[eek] Brilliant cutting in sunshine & hurrah for savings tin!
Tealady - chilli into hollow legs? oh yes... Glad she understands other folks need treats too - well done you, esp as Miss S rates as a high treat! Your OH awkward around birthdays & hell on 2 feet to shop for as well?!
DD - had the priviledge of hearing Postgate Himself on Clangers, Noggin & Teletubbies. "Post apocalyptic" has to be the best putdown I've heard of childrens TV yet! "have accidentally volunteered for week in kuwait" - only you, DD. (Says she, riveted!) Surgeons en masse usually not safe in traffic let alone cutting cake - only know what to do when in theatre! Must try yellow split peas - livestock growing like weeds & eating to fuel. Dead right to rescue & use red gloves - they take a lot of knitting - wrong not to appreciate them. Have a wonderful day at Murrayfield!
VickyA - "Pool Safety Procedures" sound fairly thorough. I kept my lot out of water by telling them there were monsters in it. And that lifeguards used their whistles to warn you of monster-attracting behaviour. Sort of true... Home made chilli - I'm getting hungry! Bed calling? My mattress gets lonesome... How do you shop for your menfolk?! Hope the takeaway is delicious & the empty boxes put to use!
Caterina - so glad to hear you have a helper on whom you can call, other than family. Sometimes it's easier to ask a third party & usually much appreciated! Laundry outside... <sigh of envy> Hurrah for artisan bread & bless the chimney guys for thoroughness! Happy birthday Mr.Caterina & Well done sorting his present. (Maybe after 20+ years marriage I'll be able to read my man's mind, but neither of us thinks it likely!)

bagpuss - I remember the Phew of The Last Paperwork (then) and toad in the hole is one of my favourite meals! And clean bedding! Boss may well have a point - if you trust yourself to aim higher, you've better odds of hitting. Parsnip & apple? Yum!
mhagster - are you sure you're on Aus time with this oh god hundreds awakening? Hurrah for scrappers! (Who fits the bit? I do most of my own bulbs & some coloured plastic & up-to-a-point wing mirrors - then I handnthe Haynes off to the menfolk & then I hand money to the garage) Cropping sweetcorn - fine trad Scot pastime! Love the other universe-ness! Giving away Tunnocks - no! Rot the toad who didn't show for schoolbook. (Mulch...) Delighted the limited edition brooch has been re-sourced for you - Happy Christmas!
BoP - I'm small enough to adore Clangers, whereas I found Zebbeddee disconcerting. Ealing! Black & white & magic. Arsenic & old lace, thank you very much - when I first saw it I thought the ladies were relatives of mine... Claws sandwiches appear almost as essential as snorkers. We used to have Lancs black pudding made down the hill, but they needed bigger premises & moved. That curry sauce looks so tempting! BoP vs. kitchen sink?! Yeay live feed scrabble!
VJsmum - Musketeers very pretty but more plot in Midwife! Ongoing auditions? Absolutely with you better to travel than to court almost-unending negatives. Hurrah for clean bedding! Boiled eggs & soldiers solid comfort food <mentally checks fridge> Italy plans, sensible daughter AND good news from cousin? Huge congratulations! Slinging very out of date stuff stimulates creative cooking...
Frith - delighted to hear Master Frith the younger revered as an asset to school calming fellow schoolmates! Yippee - allottment! (There are debates as to shed or rotavator first - I'm of the somewhere to brew first school, but if you can't beg/steal/borrow a rotavator, then consider borrowing pigs... Fencing vital though.) Goodies cat, hummed soundtrack, & tenderly squished younger son! Gastroscopy will be relatively straightforward if you can talk to medics early. (Been there this month - local anaesthetic on throat chemical banana flavour but effective, bite hard on mouthpiece & think rude paragraphs.) All good luck with allotment & good planning! Eeek Woman in Black & coppers knocking! Shed already in place? And goldfish! Wow! Not at all surprised sons Have Plans.
Chickenopolis - well done with conference & ah yes, the bedlam that is texting. Any mint chocs left?! (The folk who taught riding round me are devout earth tones & tweed - I don't know what they'd make of fleece, but I don't have to guess about pink jodhs...) "Terrier balancing, badly" has me chortling at image! Hurrah for leave sorting. "Mucked out kitchen" - I've been using the wrong tools all these years.
CCP - one of the many delights of the English Language is the scope for Other Terms for things. (Which allows me to call my sons an assortment of terms & they know exactly what I mean even when I'm onto the third page of Shakespeare...) Yippee on getting essay *in*. Top Gear great fun & Emphatically not to try to eat to! Sis home? OhWhatARelief! She can throw things as she gets properly better. Apple wobbleade sounds fun! Appeal that essay mark - you've worked too hard to let one tutor's pique at the system cost you your First! Every confidence you can write it with the grace & cunning required to get it remarked as a minimum & tutor's comment taken into consideration... Hurrah getting sick leave expunged although grr it was ever there at all. Get the wine down you. Hide Isis food & drink until tomorrow - and put her drink in the carrier.
Broomstick - imbolc this weekend?! Thank you! Two panels so far? Enjoy the saved-for ink, well done on the kitchen & how soon before 3yo's assertiveness is 'tamed', I wonder?! All the best with the weather - re-sandbagging sounds hard work!
sparrer - heroine part cleaning Two flats for a friend! well brushed dog not sharing bed? Hope fatigue provides needed sleep. Yippee for local salon model cut & colour! Phew no panic phone calls! Have you treated yourself to the EDT? "Larger-than-intended" fry up sounds lovely! All the best with new looseat & do not blame yourself - the problem is usually rooted in design &/or metallurgy.
Debtphobic - welcome! Right with you - days off should be Wonderful. However, I'll accept Not Raining... Dead right to feel good about helping a friend - well done both! Isn't Skype a godsend sometimes?

Purple Kitten - glad you're back posting even through feeling murky. A tonne of animal litter - my imagination began boggling & went for triple salko & back flip... Is chicken soup working on The Bug? Or superb curry? Delighted to hear of all this canny shopping - Costco makes an immediate impact on the wallet but saves over time.
mcculloch - wonderful friend! Have a great trip! Hurray for special buy & not lugging heavy baskets of laundry around! I must hunt down this Russian alphabet - my grip on cyrillic is about all that's left of my Russian O level. Right with you on The Last Leg - I adore how they go nose to nose with the edge of political correctness. (My lads are now calling Sochi "the big gay mountain olympics" - giving me my money's worth out of parenting again...)
dingdondsaving - not long before mat leave & feet up as much as you can?! All the best with coming weeks, family & dogs, cat and guinea pig!
BritishBibliophile - welcome! Lasagne is a tricksy dish to get right every time - hurrah for tea! And oo-er Gentleman Caller - lovely term!

    OS Pleasures this week
One of my chaps commenting on an enthusiastic kayaker "same IQ as a grey seal"...

"Can we buy some Bakewells as I need the little foil cases" - I may have to try to get some on eBay as the bakewells are regrettably fattening!

My enthusiasm for smoked salmon has led to a hypothesis that I was a grizzly bear in a former life. A platter of salmon was laid before my husband at the wedding breakfast - we joke had it been laid in front of me, there'd have been disconcerting scenes of carnage (think grizzly in a veil, swiping lums of fish into jaws...)

The poster advertising train & plane to Singapore is beautiful. Makes me wonder where DD will head off next!

Looking through the train window at where the river has exceeded it's boundaries. Reflecting the steely morning light, it's beautiful; but then I am just passing by on a train.

Feeling that tickle in the nose & finding a handkerchief before it trickles into view.

Seeing a little moving thing on the railway near Didcot & wondering what Master Frith the younger would make of it. A precise identification, probably! There's a whole museum (largely open air) of trains here, & while York has the history & scope (& weatherproofing), I think Didcot may have more rolling stock visible.

Listening to a toddler submit to having her hair brushed & wanting to tell
nursery rhymes but being shushed. The delight in a good rhyme is infectious!

Refilling my mug with a second pint of tea after the first barely touched the sides. (Blessing your name with every gulp, ampersand!)

"Ladies & Gentlemen, if you have taken this train to Coventry today, well, you're almost there." Ah bless - not all scripts are followed!

    My own bed!

Glad there's still some ginger syrup left & thank heavens for that as the school cold is settling it's fangs into me.

Relieved that two lads have picked *serious* headphones for birthdays - as I've tested (& had to bin) another pair that have not survived the washing machine.

"He's nom-nom-nomming." Thus one son explains why he's doing a job assigned another son.

Watching a mehindi artist decorating hands at the library, to the interest of all & rapture of the lucky. (Parents of lucky children were offered a quick to wash off henna mix!)

Big hugs to those who need them, safety in all weathers all round, and may our sporting heroes live up to hopes!

Thank you Kittikins and DigForVictory for DH birthday wishes.

CCP best wishes for Isis to get better soon.

    Mine for today:

    1. Breakfast in bed (egg and spinach ) courtesy of DH
    2. Outdoor bootcamp, it did not rain very much and I managed to do most of it without too much effort
    3. Lift back home in friend's car
    4. Was meant to go to Chichester but due to weather warnings we decided to stay home. This is not the pleasure, but the pleasure is that I don't have to share DH with his cousin at the weekend. Selfish I know, but I don't get to spend a lot of time with DH, because of his work and my busyness and tiredness in the evenings!
    5. Earlyish night to bed. Needing my beauty sleep!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

    Hope you're doing OK, Ampersand.

Have been told to come off all medication so the gastroscopy can see me at my worst (!) So one big burp today and feel like I've swallowed a house brick!

    Pleasures for today:

    1) A lie in!

    2) Porridge for breakfast.

    3) Went to the allotment! Sons overwhelmed (good to see I am back in my position as best mummy in the world), did lots of digging, threw stuff in the compost bin etc. A very thin black cat came in to see us and drank out of the fishpond! The rain just about held off while we were there.

We dug about half of it over and there is nothing in it apart from some lavender and rhubarb.

    4) Such a storm this afternoon that we lit the stove early and sat by it watching films.

    5) Fish and chips from the van for tea.

    6) Watched some of the Voice and all of Casualty.

Hi folks, hugs to anyone suffering wih the wild weather.
Mixed day for me as it has been quite good, but I just checked work email and I have been refused permission for a brilliant year-long secondment which would have given me a temporary promotion.:(:(
    Anyway, 5 OS pleasures today

: Seen a nice possible placement year job that would suit DD at Uni.

: Cheap corned beef hash for tea, very tasty.:)

: Made a lemon cream pie with a recipe found on here this week which is absolutely DIVINE.:j

: couple of glasses Torro Loco A1di wine this evening.

: Bought a couple of bits ready for Valentines Day, but kept it to £5.:smileyhea

P.S. Frith- I have had a gastroscopy with no sedation. It was not the best, but it was over quickly and I was able to just hop off the bed and carry on regardless, just had to wait a couple of hours to drink due to the throat spray.
  • Mini rant sorry I know it’s a pleasures thread but just to get it off my chest….sickened and saddened to learn that my dad was effectively done over by the people who delivered a new motor scooter to him, I swear if I find out who it is they wouldn’t know what had hit them I am livid that they work in a business where they are going to encounter vulnerable people as a part of every business and that is what they do. Livid miffed storming about just about covers it.

1.We went out for a drive to clear my muzzy head and it worked.;)
2.Came back and tidied up the front garden, the plants haven’t died off and I haven’t the heart to cut them if they want to live, so had to get creative and tie them up to give the other plants and snow drops trying to flower under it a chance.:D
3.Actually feeling like my body shape is err shaping a bit now a mix of diet and pilates might be doing something little at least.
4.Not helping the above diet but having moved a tone of litter about again and being a tad bit fuming due to the above we did treat ourselves to Chinese, but on the vow to be very good food planning next week.
    5. I just had a tipple of brandy and really enjoyed it as a treat.:o
