My heart is hurting today, Yang has just been diagnosed with feline diabetes, which was the cause of my losing his sister last year. I was sure it wasn't hereditary and it's not usually, except as the vet said in oriental-type cats which mine are. So we're back to insulin twice daily and hoping this time it will stabilise him. At risk of sounding like a certain gentleman poster on this forum - 'Bloomin' cats!'
Sparrer hope you are feeling better x
Thank you Skint, am feeling physically much better and quite positive about the results still to come. Envious of your winter seafront walks, another of the things I miss about living in W Sx.

mhags hope your journey is going smoothly with no hold-ups. Your Christmas holiday make lovely reading (yes you should turn your adventures into a book) and am looking for more to come when you get bck to your second home
lfs 6000? Wow, that's a lot of wheelbarrow-loads of celeriac! And to think I've never tried even one, for lack of knowing what the heck to do with it :o. Hoping all is well at the hospital
VJsmum the audition sounds quite positive, good luck for a second one.
chicken funny little terrier, bet you gave in to her!
CCP well done on the three good finds, and on getting hold of LL at last. Hope this time his contractor will admit there is a leak!
VickyA go for it, it's a long time doing a job you don't enjoy. Rather find one you do, then it won't feel like work - believe me I know, didn't find my dream job until 2 years before retirement and kicked myself for wasting so much of my life. The only scary bit is thinking about it, once you set the wheels in motion you'll begin to feel a lot more at ease. Good luck searching for what is right for you :)
DFV Love my bed but have to get up as soon as I'm awake. Do your chittering birds take sugar? ;)
ampersand there was a time when I didn't particularly like the perfume of hyacinths, thought it too heavy, but now I love it - must be growing up ;). Enjoy
Tealady I love lists, crossing things off, adding things for tomorrow, seeing drawers, cupboards get cleared out and the bag for the cs growing. Well done for getting the yellow thing to shine for your laundry to dry
Broomstick - sounds like you're another one having a clear out. Reminds me of the expression a new broom sweeping clean - must all to be to do with the New Year. Can you post the recipe for the fruit sponge please? I can cope with simple :o
Frith you too should write a book - one with all the wonderful things your sons say. They're gems :). I have a small notebook with things my elderly residents used to say, they still make me smile when I read through them
Caterina good to see you back. Phew, bet you were pleased the cobblers was open!
kittikins how lovely for you to have a break, and of your friend to lend you somewhere to stay. It's fun to go back and catch up with old friends
cNMummy some good OS ideas there, I recently learned that a ketchup 'conditioner' takes away any yellow in my fair hair and it really works! Well done on asking for a filing system to keep yourself in order, very useful
DD :rotfl: at your #2, and your #5 - that can't be the reason because you keep getting asked to perform :). Wish I could have my mutt clipped out but he'd look a bit odd with his feathered legs and tail :D
BoP don't get blown onto the pitch or Mrs BoPsie will have some very muddy togs to launder! I see the yellow thing was sent this way again, just until the storm. I have an amazing photograph of the rainbow

    1. Went to Mr S and got a till spit for 9p off a litre of petrol. Made me smile.
    2. Previous elec co sent me a very nice cheque on closing my account. Made me smile :)
    3. Yang doesn't flinch, in fact he purrs like a traction engine, when I give him his insulin - pleased I haven't lost the knack
    4. A person in my fellowship has upgraded his mobile phone and given me his 'old' one, refuses to take anything for it. Trouble is mine makes phone calls and sends text messages, the new one has 'apps', Windows, video, you name it, it's on there to confuzzle me! But it was very kind of him even if it would cost me three times as much to run as my old faithful does. Think I'll stick to the one I know
    5. Decorations down, odd bits of garland super-glued back on, box sorted and lots of odd bits discarded, the house looks so tidy now I've been able to clean and dust the surfaces

Enjoy the rest of the day :)

    Evening all.

I'm in need of some reasons to be cheerful this evening, having got home to find water once again dripping steadily through my ceiling in several places. :( I find there's something peculiarly depressing about the noise of water dripping into bowls, I guess as a result of living in a seriously damp flat a few years ago which has left me with an apparently permanent tendency to suffer from coughs and chest infections. :(

    1) Lots of dramatic weather to watch from the office window, and I somehow missed the worst of it on every occasion I had to go outside - although the wind was nearly strong enough to blow me over when I left work this afternoon, and I'm not exactly a flimsy little thing!

    2) I thought to put a bowl under the site of the worst leak before going to work this morning, so I've caught at least some of the incoming water (including some on my head by carelessly stepping over the bowl when I got home :o).

    3) Isis was sick while I was at work but somehow managed to be so IN her food bowl, which was unpleasant but at least meant there was minimal mess to clear up!

    4) Deciding not to go to my OU tutorial tomorrow. I feel a bit guilty as it will be the second one in a row I've missed, but I just don't think it's worth the risk in such unpleasant weather.

    5) A$da 'taekaway' pizza for dinner, with the last of the RTC dips I picked up just before the New Year. To be accompanied by a glass of wine, to hopefully distract me from the constant drip... drip... drip... :(

sparrer - I'm so sorry to hear about poor Yang. Fingers crossed the insulin does the trick for him.

mhagster - hope all is going well on your return to the heat, parrots and possums! I'm glad you had such a nice, if hectic, time.

Caterina - it's really nice to hear from you. :)

    Stay safe and dry, everyone!
Back after a very long break!
  • Thanks everyone x

Awww, thanks SO much to all those people offering me and others support. It really does mean a lot. :) I told a good friend, who has her own problems, about it all today. She was mortified that I hadn't told her previously, but I pointed out that it would have only involved me sobbing down the phone so doing it via e-mail was less traumatic for her! :D

I've been thinking about one idea I've had, which I'm definitely going to research further. I'm now feeling a teensy bit excited, but still apprehensive that it might all go horribly wrong... At least DH has a job. :)

Anyway my 5 for today, other than planning world domination:

    1) Cancelled subscription to something which was costing me £10 per month and not seeing any benefit. £120 saved for the year!

    2) Using up veggies in the fridge and wine which I'd frozen in a bolognese sauce. It's bubbling away in the kitchen at the moment! What we don't eat tonight will go in the freezer for later in the term when things are hectic!

    3) Used my union subscription to order a Mr T's gift card. I get 3% extra every time I put credit on it. It'll save us £60 per year. :j :j

    4) Shredded loads of old paperwork and filed newer stuff. Anyone know how long you should keep old payslips? I've got all the relevant P60s, which I know I should keep forever more!

    5) Listed a couple more books on my Amazon selling account. Still waiting for people to take the bait... :D

I have a lovely glass of wine next to me, which I'd better drink before it gets warm. ;)

Good evening all , from a blustery south coast.

CCP - poor you! Where is the LL?

DfV - thank you xx I think that he is still missing - I keep checking the news and nothing has been updated .. it is horrendous here and he left his house ill prepared - no meds , innapropriate clothing etc on 29th :(

Sparrer - I am sorry to hear about Yang x

LfS - at least you got out and about in the community ;) sorry that Dr. didn't know their a*se from elbow re your surgery.

VJsmum - fingers crossed for DD x it sounds like you had a nice time together though

    5 for today

    1. Day off :D

2.Trimmed DM's hair and squeezed her spots :rotfl:I would love to earn a living squeezing spots :oI am cut out for it:D

    3. Afternoon nap on sofa with a terrier shaped hwb. I opened a bag of toffees and she run off upstairs and slept on my bed for 3 hours. I think she has been told off for scavenging in her previous life .Any packet opening and she's off !

4.Although I am peed off with the open plan garden as hens are in their run and I believe in free ranging animals - they would have been blown away today anyway. Instead they were secure and dry and very quiet.. .

Just about off! Partaking of airports free half hour internet!

    Today's pleasures:

Popping down to old work and seeing lots of people that I used to work with there. Nice to see them all.

Goodbyes to the mums! Not really a pleasure but I'm glad we've been above to spend some time with them this year.

Had the tiniest snoozette at MILs ....on her spare bed!

A few bargains at airport ...a few wee sneaky items for DD 2's birthday in a few weeks....duty free and then 50-70% off.

Laughing at / with my son as he bought his girlfriend a cuddly toy Nessie!

Catch you on the other side !

    Evening

    Sparrer - (((hugs)))

    Pleasures for today,
    1. Used some of the Christmas cheese in OH wraps for lunch
    2. Another drawer sorted and a small bag to the charity shop
    3. Used more of the stuff in the fridge - made small pot of tomato and red wine sauce and roasted lots of potatoes off. All now in the freezer.
    4. Food shopping done so don't have to go tomorrow and came in £20 under budget
    5. Nice beef casserole for dinner that I put in the slow cooker this morning.

    Hugs to all

Sparrer :( sorry to read about Yang xx

Feeling a bit bleugh tonight, Anyway, life is fine really, I probably just need to get over myself...

    1. Yesterday, a lovely pharmacy dispenser at the surgery took in my prescription and immediately got me the drugs I'd run out of, rather than making me wait a couple of days (my mum takes the same things so I could have borrowed a strip off her, but it was lovely not to have to).

    2. Had a nice chat in a local shop and signed their anti-MrT's petition.

    3. Went for a fabulously relaxing manicure and facial, my bestest Christmas present :)

    4. Knowing that this feeling WILL pass, probably by morning!

    5. DD had a lovely lie-in, then came in to my room for cuddles this morning :)

    :hello: Caterina
Frith, sounds like you should have celeriac more often!
VJs mum fingers crossed for your DD's recall and CCP fingers crossed for your sister and that your LL deals with the colander :D you are living in.
    (((Kittikins)))
(((Sparrer))), (((Yang))) And on a completely different note: mega easy fruit sponge pudding. Feeds 2 DSs with ordinary sized portions! When they were little it made a helping for each of us. Sorry about the mix of different units!
Mix two eggs with 2 Tsp of sugar (or honey if you prefer), fold in 2 oz self-raising flour until it looks like a uniform paste. Butter a dish (I use an 8" round one). Drain the juice from a 410g (ish) tin of fruit and put the fruit in the dish so it covers the bottom of it. Pour the mixture over the top so all the fruit is covered. Bake at 180 C for 30-40 mins until golden brown on top. It's best eaten hot with yoghurt, icecream or custard. We only ever get tinned fruit in fruit juice not syrup. You might have to adjust the sweetening if you use the latter.

    Anyway, 5 pleasures for Friday:

    1. Our river is still behaving itself. It's close to its maximum at the next measuring point upstream but we are still only on alert.:)

    2. Have kept the tidying and clearing going on. Very pleased with myself with a large black sack of paper taken to recycling; 2 full carriers of books, one of clothes and a box of miscellaneous bits taken to charity shops; plus a carrier of food we were given but can't eat due to allergies taken to the Food Bank. We had an extra doorstep recycling collection as well.

    3. Lovely supper with baked fish, broccoli, carrots and oven cooked spuds followed by pineapple sponge with ice cream, as above, for DSs and just pineapple for me.

    4. Very much enjoyed watching 'The Code of Life' on iplayer about the history of genetics. My knowledge of the subject is sketchy so this was a good overview.

    5. Still loving reading the WW2 diaries. It's fascinating and is helping put the grotty weather into perspective no end.

    Sweet dreams

    B x
