    LOL at weehole!

My day is going rather splendidly so I might manage 5 already!

    1) Boys off to school happily.

    2) Date has cancelled (he's poorly) but will re-arrange. I wasn't really in the mood for a date today anyway and have a bit of a sore throat so am secretly relieved.

    3) Mum and dad gave me a lift into Ludlow with them. Ludlow is always lovely. I didn't manage a Reverbe (though I did look) but managed to get a bow tie for smaller son's fancy dress costume from a charity shop for £1.99 (he's going as Dr Who) and 2 gingerbread men for them. Then, in the very last charity shop I looked in, I found a FatFace shirt for £3! I have trouble getting shirts because my shoulders are really wide (in fact I have trouble getting tops at all because I'm quite long) but this one is a great fit.

    4) Had a mug of hot chocolate in Costa while I waited for mum and dad to get back to the car. It just seemed that everyone was in a good mood in there so the lady behind the counter carried a tray over for a shopper then a lady talked to me about sharing the newspapers.

    5) Smaller son's Ebay trousers came in the post.

    6) Just boarded up the broken window in the porch so that's another good job done.

    7) Dad and brother are coming later to take some of my furniture away before the builders come next week.

    8) Man from Freecycle is coming later to have my TV cabinet. There is so much more room now it's gone. Not as much room as there will be when the table, sofa and fireguard go and there is only a piano left in the living room for the next fortnight!!

    re-Bonjour.
Had actually done a big post just after Antiques Fair and before ferry[5-day flit>France]and screen just went blank. Then something about 'sorry, we have no information for Hillbilly ole home outdoor !!!!ing boy'.
    Quoi?
Despite usual Primus promises, net was NOT back when I rtn'd, late Mon. night, Re-connected only since last night. It's infuriating.

    So:
    1. Fair went well, for my low expectation level and even had a buyer who recognised and remembered me - and their purchase, as did I! - from the first ever Fair there, at R's old school. It has helped my confidence, at least until next time, which I've this morning booked for my rtn in Sept @ Ally Pally, which is also another connxn with my late R, who got it up and running with a friend back in the 60's. Arson killed that.
    2. Celebration and Thankyou day at Charity showroom, last Tues. and hier, with so many good people and friends and supporters present. A wonderful atmosphere both times. We've now closed. I'll start back at previous premises when I'm back.
    3. In France for 5 days. Only Friday was fine. Mucked about happily in Flanders nonetheless, some nice buying most days....except La Voix du Nord had a wrong date for St Omer on Sunday. Went all the way there for zilch, altho' diverted through various tiny v-g's and village brocs/fêtes etc. I love it all.
    4. Bastille Day wash-out, but so what. Wonderful feux d'artifice over harbour from high up L'escale, the wonderful new[ouvert 10 juin, which was R's anniversaire] YH. The French do have great vision where redevelopment is concerned, and it's happening, with view to being world capital of bio-diversity, around Dunkirk, which I'd never explored before. Terrific ideas, despite recession and real, long run-down hardship evident. I love harbours, ports, no matter how they are. Go to Bergues, too, if ever you're that way. An English jazz quintet were playing/singing in the square during one of the infinitely repeated commune/village/town fêtes which enrich France totally, throughout the year, but especially from May>October.
    5. Felt at rest, over and again, and content. With car, books, radio, small means, baguettes, OUI - PAINS AU CHOCOLAT/PAINS AUX RAISINS Kittikins, fresh simple food and fruit, water, Thermos.. . .easily filled my days and nights and chatted happily when the occasion arose.
    6. Best Thermos was achieved around 2am. Used large rock, large woven mat[1 euro, Emmaus, Dunkirk-fabulous thing, however shabby chic now, will serveme well at other fairs] to form shelter for boiling of water on recent carboot acquired gas burner. Cold, windy, raining - but made all work. Blessed Poundland gas ignition wand - they are brilliant and come with extra fuel.
    7. Physio appt this a.m. Very good prof. lady. I have things to do daily, too, kittikins. Hopefully January's pitch-night fall effects will come right eventually.
    8. Turned left a few steps to Dentist, who has amazingly, kindly, sorted out a sudden bizarrely crumbled filling within an hour of my calling in. This is when I know how lucky this makes me. I remember NZ upbringing days and Dentists' bills, know more from within family now...horrendous. Seeing that NHS 'patients wanted' sign in village shop, day 1 or 2 of moving here, has been more than a godsend. They are v. state of art, too.
    9. sparrer- hope to hear from you soon. In this weather, moi porting soap, I might arrive like Bubbles de Vere.
    10. When away, always have 2 radios. Was captivated by R5 golf commentary, heard across Channel, over all days, alternating with France Inter/RMC Tour de France. Fabulous listening, alternating with reading, walking, staring at sea, binocs at hand...
    11. Then, en route back hier, rejoicing - with vj'smum - re:Murdoch and all his filthy works. VERY GLAD that enough commentators drew attention to them coming across as practised[they'd been well-drilled by their new PR Co.], insincere, unsatisfactory. Sadly, only the outstanding MP Tom Watson had their measure in questioning, but enough may have been done to carry the day. They need to be assured that if Nick Davis has gone to ground since last week, it's only because he's digging again. NOTHING WILL REMAIN HIDDEN. Let the death of Sean Hoare serve as their Dr Kelly nemesis. Walking along the Dunkirk beaches puts Murdoch muck and murk into perspective. There, they would have had real exposure.....
    12. I'd better stop.................:-), in my ampersandy excess, with a 5p reverbe, found in ferry bowels, en route back.

Off to have grey banished shortly, College salon, for which Hurrah!

    Happy Welcomes to our newbies.

    Hi all

Sparrer, glad you found the tip useful!

You know, sometimes I think I ought to market myself as a "downshift consultant", I have done this for so long that I have a wealth of information about living well on a low income. I am staggered by how many people I meet who do not have a clue about all the things that I do as a matter of course to save money!

    Mhagster, congratulations on your 9-month-versary!

Here are my pleasures for today:

1 - Went to a mending class, cost me £12 but I learnt how to mend socks properly (not higgledy piggledy like I did before). So it was a good investment, apart from the intrinsic pleasure of being in good company and learning a new skill.

2 - The place where I did the mending class needs volunteers and I might just take up the opportunity, they seem very pleasant and it would give me a chance to attend their events for free if I were there to help.

3 - Having got a shock at the renewal price of my cats' insurance I went online and found a much better quote AND cashback.

4 - The camping tent I ordered was not delivered, the supplier sent it to the wrong address. So I called and arranged to collect it at a local store. Complained about the inconvenience and they offered me an extra 10% off on an already very good sale price (and I have already got some cashback for it!).

5 - Received a book in the post that I had ordered a couple of days ago and can't wait to start it.

6 - I was going to go out tonight but cancelled as I am very tired (early rising this morning) so I am really looking forward to a quiet evening in reading.

    Good night all x
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

    Hello

I love this thread! Please may I join in ?

    Five pleasures so far today

    • Collecting a few blackberries from the garden. Hens tried to help me by standing on tip toes and collecting their own.
    • banking £20 worth of loose change which I have put by for nice days out.
    • met my "old" work colleagues yesterday and it was so nice to catch up. Emailed them today to thank them for such a nice evening.
    • Picking a fresh courgette to have with my dinner .
    • Lovely bagfull of spuds from the garden , I gave some to my Mum who lives next door. Who then invited me for a Chinese meal tommorrow night, her treat.

    So far so good!
:AToo fat to be Felicity Kendal , but aim for a bit more of the good life :A
