I don't blame you for looking at rentals!
I know it's a big chunk of money, and it's a seriously amazing gift, but either NIMs Dad is going to give you it or he isn't. He can't keep dangling it infront of you and then pulling it away when he fancies. It isn't very fair more than anything.

I dispise renting, but I can't afford to buy on my own so I don't have a choice in the matter.

In the town we want to rent in there are a few groups (almost like housing association groups - but for some reason they dont fall into that category) and they own say 20/30 properties each.
If you manage to get one they basically leave you to it, you can decorate etc, basically do what you want aslong as you dont destroy the house.

Thats what we're hoping to get when we move out.

That is a good idea Flower, that is the main reason I want to buy so I can decorate!

But why would you spend money adding value to someone elses house?

To make it your home? They are specifically aimed at long term rentals, they are not your standard landlords, they cant decide after 6 months they want you out. They offer you 5 year rental agreements.

Thats what OHs parents house is where we are living, they have lived there for 25 years - put in their own kicthen, decorate when they want to etc..

I can see why you'd want to make it your own, but at the end of the day they can serve notice on you to get you out in 2 months regardless of if you have a 5 year contract, or worse they are repo-d and you're out with no notice, and for that reason I'd not spend money on bettering someone elses house.

Its not their house - well obviously it is, but its not an individual landlord. And the contracts they give you mean they cant just evict you like they would a normal tenant, for example if they wanted to evict OHs parents it would take them a good 6 - 12 months process.
Personally i dont see buying a few tins of paints as a huge expense for somewhere i could live for 5 years.

I appreciate that type of thing isnt for everyone but its an alternative option for people who cant afford to buy, but want more security than a 'normal' landlord could give you.

The only reason they would ever evict you is if you are appauling tenants.

I think it sounds like a good idea Flower.

Dinah - Could you just rent a small 1 bed flat just for a while till you and NIM get the money together to buy if it came to it?

Yes we could, and I'd rent as small as we could so we could save as much as possible. Would take us at least 5 years to save, but at least I'd get a say then surely?!
