It seems most companies are too lazy. They find it easier to harrass the new occupier, until they do the leg work for them."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Hi I sort of have a similar problem, O2 passed a debt onto another company, turned the guys phone off (we brought the houe off him 2.5 years ago) and constantly get letters (approx 3 a month, thats not constant but feels like it).
We called 02 to tell them and got 'why did you open the letter'-because we have sent them back for months and are still getting them, then when the debt was passed on I called that company who said 'yes we will remove you address' but never do, most recent letter-they are taking him to court. I get sick of returning the letter, not opening them, sometimes opening them and calling the company etc. Just worried the bailefs will show up and expect me to pay and not believe he doesn't live here.
Any advice? Can I report them or whatever for harassment?0 -

Everytime i move into a new property I seem to get baliffs turn up. I just show them my rental agreement and give them my landlord contact detials and thankfully never hear from them again. The only time that didn't happen was with Npower who refused to belive me my landlord and rental agreement and I had to make an offical complaint before they belived me.0 -
Is it really so difficult to either write "Return to Sender- Not at this address" on an envelope and pop it back in the post, or just pop it straight in the bin?
Is it really massively stressful to say "I'm sorry, there's no one by that name at this number" to someone on the phone?
If you don't have 30 seconds spare to do these then maybe it's soemthing else about your lifestyle that's causing you stress.
If you're worried about how a previous resident's debts might affect you then get a free credit check on your address and take appropriate action once that's done.
If it gets to the stage when baliffs or police come a-knocking at your door, then a quick 30 second conversation will clarify everything and end the matter.0 -
over 5 years ago my house was a rental property, i purchased it over 3 years ago and the previous owners lived there just over 2 years before that. i kept getting letters for a Mr P and his partner Miss S and kept sending them back RTS not known at this address - eventually i got a debt collector knocking on the door chasing Mr P's debt with Abbey .. i explained i had no connection with him eventually he went away saying he would check the dates on land registery. after that i opened all mail for Mr P and his partner and it seems Abbey find a dead and and then a few months later pass the details on to another agencey .. and we go through the whole thing again i open mail and contact the agency to say he has not lived at the address for at least 5 years and the address has changed hands twice since .. they list it on their records and inform Abbey and it all starts again with a different agency!! 2 weeks ago mr P got a letter from a solicitors regarding the debt and again i contacted them and they were going to change their records bla bla bla - today for the first time Abbey have sent Mrs P a bank statment at my address !!!!!! are Abbey up to!!Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0

No its not too diffcult the first, second third fourth, possibly fifth time, but when you have been doing it for over 2 years, those few seconds, stopping the car on the way past the mail box, add up and it becomes a pain in the !!!, and you start to worry about bailiffs turning up etc. If it was a one off, like the lady who lives at 180, got a letter from her solicitor to my house, number 18 (solicitor missed off the 0), it was no problem to walk up and give it to her, would I do it a couple off times a month-no!0 -

That definitely would be annoying and I'd certainly be mentioning the phrases "harrassment" and "is a criminal offence" a few times to the caller. Have you tried that?
It looks like Abbey are just useless. Incidentally when they start misquoting the DPA to you, it might be worth mentioning that it is an offence under the DPA for an organisation to hold information about a person that they know to be incorrect. If you have written to Abbey informing them of their error regarding Mr. Cow's residence at your address and they continue to disregard them, I imagine the Information Commissioner's Office would be quite interested.
Well that's what you tell Abbey anyway.0 -
I get constant letters for a previous tenant, and they have not lived here for over 5 years.
I got fed up of constantly every day writing "return to sender" or "not at this address" and having to post these off.
I have had phonecalls for them, I constantly state over and over they don't live here and NO I don't know where they live, even if I did I would happily say "Data Protection Act forbids me), I now automatically throw them straight into the bin. As I said I would do for any further posts for this person.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

For normal mail that is addressed to a former owner/tenant you can regester with the Mailing Preference Service, as no longer living at this address. That should stop a lot of the junk.
For phone calls, Phone companys tend to reuse numbers after about 6 months so you can regester the phone number with the Telephone Preference Service, and this should stop unwanted calls.
Some companys dont bother to look when you send letters back RTS not known at this address, so on the advise of my solicitor i now but all their letters back in a new enverlope with a pre set letter stating when i moved in, and that i am regestered on the electrol roll if they would like to check that. i also put in my letter that if i keep recieving mail for the wrong person i will report them to every agancy i can think off including the police (harresment). It is the cost of a second class stamp and an enverlope but i have found it to work.0
