I understand what you ment OP. I must say this is something I've noticed in my local store to. Also if you buy full fat drinks like coke etc you tend to be offered them, possibly because its classed as a junk food.

On a serious note maybe the staff just hate asking everyone who comes through their till, and think larger people are more likely to buy the chocs than skinnies are. There are some individuals who get narked when asked such simple things and it probably puts some of them off.
As an example I once worked in a toy shop over the Christmas period and we were supposed to ask every person if they wanted to sign up to our mailing list. A lot of people were frustrated at being asked this when they wanted to get out asap so I used to just ask women with kids and elderly people, as they seemed the most likely to find it useful. I hardly ever bothered with the men as the majority of them came in last minute on Christmas Eve looking incredibly stressed- and I didn't want to add to it!
You could argue this was blatant discrimination on my behalf but I was simply using my common sense as it gets a bit soul destroying having the ask the same thing all day long. Besides, both those mailing list forms and the half price chocolate in WHSmiths is by the tills, so if you do want some you can always ask!0 -
