Avg 9 free new release problems

There appears to be many problems with this new release, my laptop kept stalling and I could not connect to many sites, as this came out the same time as lots of microsoft updates I did not know which (if any) of them was causing the faults. I disabled Zone Alarm that did not work, I carried out lots of scans in case a nasty had got in no joy, then I uninstalled avg 9 and installed avast what a difference its like my PC has emerged from treacle its loads faster and no more problems. On the avg free forum it appears that this latest update is causing awful problems, so any of you thinking of downloading avg 9 be aware.

AVG9 was downloaded and put on so this could be it.

Me too! I uninstalled 9 and went back to 8.5 which appears to be working fine.

9 is working fine on my laptop.
infact it picked up a virus that the microsoft defender and 8.5 didnt detect

I am using 8.5... and my laptop is running like treacle (perfect expression)!!! To be fair think it is something else I don't know how to identify. Not so techie know-howed but done scan's, defrag's, auto clean up, program removals and still rubbish and it still 50% of memory available. I dunno..
Green and minimal chemicals is the new black- I know a fair old bit about sustainability, specially energy and transport stuff. If I can help- please ask!

Are you SURE its a virus? AVG is renowned for 'false positives', or it could easily be that version 9 is now removing things that are no threat at all

Me too, I thought it was my laptop dying. It crashed so badly that I had to do a couple of factory restores to bring it back to life. :(

AVG 9 is gone and avast installed, and everything is running like magic. Doesn't bring my files back to life, but so be it. I won't be using AVG again.

Firstly, AVG 9.0 is on the whole excellent and very robust, however, I had the same problems when I upgraded from 8.5 to 9.0 (difficulty surfing with ease) - here's how to fix it!

Open the AVG user interface (right click on the AVG icon on the system tray)

Right click on the 'link scanner' and 'open', then disable the three settings at the bottom. save your changes. Then close that window. Then 'right click' on the link scanner icon and place a tick on the 'ignore the state of this component' - if you don't do this, you'll get a warning triangle appearing on the AVG icon in your system tray.

It took me three days of faffing around with every one of my browser settings and numerous other crap before I worked this out!!

Don't worry about disabling the linkscanner - it's a new feature, and doesn't quite work yet, as long as you surf sensibly, you'll be absolutely fine.
  • Hello

Had the same problems re. not being able to connect to certain websites and other sites just "hanging" after installing AVG version 9. Went back to version 8.5 and all seems well now.

Someone on the AVG Forum posted the following which may be of help:

"I also had problems with blocked web pages since upgrading to AVG 9 but have found the cause.
AVG Active Surf-Shield is the culprit!!
Deactivate it by unchecking the relevant box (click Total protection in the bar) the text in the box now changes to Limited Protection and the icon at the bottom displays a yellow triangle with exclamation mark. But this is preferable, I can now access all pages without problems"

Apparently version 8.5 expires at the end of November so I hope the problems are properly sorted by then.
  • AVG Active Surf-Shield is the culprit!!

Had to smile!! Active Surf Shield is found under the 'linkscanner' solution on my previous post. If you follow my original instructions, you will disable the surf shield, hence your PC will work. AVG have now updated version 9 several times, currently on version 9.0.704 - all without resolving this issue.

Only working solution is still to disable 'linkscanner' (which in turn disables Surf Sheild). As long as you surf with a healthy dollop of common sense, you should have no problems....
