Disabling the linkscanner seems to solve the problem. Apparently AVG are working on it. But might try a different antivirus program to see how it runs.
i uninstalled my AVG and zonealarm and now using MS essential security and online armour- so far no problems and IE seems a bit faster too!0 -
Hi paulofalus
Yes I closed my browser and reopened it several times, but with no joy. Same on both IE and Firefox.
Finally sorted the problem by uninstalling AVG 9, then reinstalled it the way that Eric Pisch recommended... via "filehippo" instead of using the web installer. After doing this, frugalstephen's remedy then worked. Phew!
So thanks everyone.0 -
Hi,
First post. I cannot thank frugalstephen enough for the solution he posted back on 28-10-2009. I had only taken AVG v 9 at the very last moment at the end of November and was mortified with the awful results. So glad to have found his posting. Has anyone seen or heard of a fix from AVG to allow us to re-enable the link scanner without suffering?
Also, as we all know, Windows Defender is disabled by AVG v 9, are we losing anything of importance without it? I realise that we can re-enable it but it needs to be done each time the pc is started.
Many thanks

Well, disabling the link scanner has made no difference at all.Just been reading on the AVG forums and it is a major headache, this data execution thing. The only websites it won't let me in on are my baking ones.Strangely i have the same set up on my laptop which is vista not xp,and i have no problem.I am not computer savvy and just don't know what to do next.Is avast a better one to install.I have spybot.0

My personal opinion of AVG is its main feature is that it makes your computer so unusable that even malware dont want to run on it! Its a unique way of doing things and before its time I'm sure.
I really dont understand why when the new version doesn't work people revert to an earlier version, why not just install a better antivirus???? Boggles the mind.
I'll add:
Avira
Avast
Microsoft Security Essentials0 -
My advice is: STAY AWAY FROM AVG 9.0!!!!
I am a techie person and upgraded from the free version of AVG 8.0 to 9.0. And the 9.0 version has allowed a virus to enter my laptop, which is now ruined.
Here's what happened:
The virus, which is calle "Antivirus Vista" got past AVG 9.0 and you get lots of popup windows which seem to be real, but they are fake, and they are the virus in action. Those windows can be disabled briefly using the Task Manager, but they keep returning. In the end this virus managed to uninstall my browsers and my AVG, and in addition it does not let me access the registry. I will need a professional to remove the virus completely. The same exact thing happened to a friend of mine and by the way we were both running Windows Vista.
AVG 9.0 did not catch the virus (whose name is Antivirus Vista). It's a shame that AVG has allowed itself to sink to such a level. Is this an attempt to get the people using the free version to upgrade to their paid version?
Not me.
No more AVG for me, free or otherwise. I am going to get McAffee.0 -

Search these pages for much better alternatives.
I've just removed 300+ infections from a McAfee 'protected' laptop.
I used the Free Avira.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Thanks. I'll check out what you said. I was thinking of McAffee because they use it where I work on the corporate network.0
