I'm one of those lol.. esp. this time of year when I hibernate! Me too... but you're used to running your own life (and other peoples') and have to take all sorts of other stuff into account, whereas most students just have to work out how to fit lectures in with drinking, and develop a homing instinct so that they can reach the lecture rooms from whichever gutter they wake up in! Generally uni life assumes that you don't have any other priorities.
Who is your main contact at uni? Is there a tutor who you see for general stuff, not subject-specific things? Or do you have a buddy or mentor? There is my personal tutor whom I have not yet met seeing as they changed my tutor 2 weeks ago without telling me and I haven't been there until this week. Get a meeting set up asap - this is the person who should be able to advise you!! They should be able to help you understand the way that things work, why they work that way and what can and can't be changed. If they are aware of your mobility problems, you should politely remind them that you can't walk long distances - if they aren't, ask them how you formally make them aware, and what they can do to accommodate them. Of course they aren't aware. I don't want to be treated like an alien. They are quite unhelpful to the lady whose problems are so much worse than mine!! I quite like being just me rather than 'the person with 8 number of children' or 'the person with X issues' They need to know (not the number of kids, just that you have childcare commitments and mobility issues), as otherwise they can't make sure that your arrangements work for you... a bit like the prolems I'm having at the moment! They can keep the information confidential, but take it into account when planning.
As for the income issues - obviously those need to be sorted out with the relevant bureaucrats, but the university will probably have a hardship fund that can provide you with a loan to tide you over, or may be able to point you in the way of organisations who provide support to students.
I have been bombading them with phone calls to no avail. They just say it is being dealt with and there is nothing else they can do.. blah.. blah.. Have you found out about hardship funds from the uni as well as bending the ears of the idiots who are supposed to sort out your long-term finances?
Don't give up yet - remember, you're ill, you've been through a lot of changes over the past few months, of which uni is the latest (I'm sure you know about the change cycle - which stage do you reckon you're in now?!), and it's October and getting dark & damp (although strangely not as cold as it should be!). Wait until things settle down before making a decision.
I am giving it until Christmas. If I still feel this negative about it then I shall look at changng course. Not helped of course by the fact I was talkign to a friend from college today who is doing social work and is there 6 hours A WEEK!!!!! I do more than that in one day!! I am glad sh eis enjoying it though but it does just seem it is only the biological sciences dept that sucks! stage 2.. Doubt.. definitely. Remember, different types of courses require different types of teaching. I didn't go to a single lecture in my final year (and they were only scheduled 4 mornings a week), as I had so much 1-2-1 teaching in my last two years. But the scientists/medics etc had 6 mornings & 5 afternoons a week of lectures/lab work etc, so it really does depend on what you're doing. Just keep reminding yourself that it takes time to adapt.
