Try this,I make them every 2 weeks & they keep in the fridge no problems.
You need;
1 X Pack Just Roll Puff Pastry (or home made)
1 X Packet of HERTA Hot Dogs. (I use the spicy ones) Cut into shorter lengths or left whole, pack of 10.
1 X Onion,sliced & fried off till golden
Grain Mustard or whatever sauce you want really.
Egg to glaze
Cut the pastry sheets into a size slightly longer than the hot dogs & three times the width.Lay a layer of mustard down on the top of the pastry & top that with some of the onions, lay a Hot Dog on top, roll up the pastry into a cigar shape & crimp (not too tight as the hotdogs may split)
Brush with egg & cook in the oven till golden.
They beat a commercial sausage roll hands down.
Prices current on the Tesco's website.I have'nt priced the egg or mustard as these are store cupboard staples.
Pack of Pastry; £1.50
Pack of Herta Dogs; £1.79
Onion;£0.20
Total cost £3.49
Cost of a pack of Walls equivelent is £1.79 for 4.

I bake, lots, cakes, bread, biscuits, but find I dont do much savory stuff. So,by way of encouragement I thought a savory thread might be a good idea. I can only think of sausage plait and not roast. What other savory things do you make? and have you baked any today?0

Made a gratin well three actually out of bits and pieces in the fridge and freezer that needed using up. All sorts of odds and ends of veg - baby sweetcorn, courgettes, mixed peppers, asparagus, onions, mushrooms bit of garlic and garlic sausage in a white sauce with a breadcrumb and cheese topping. practically everything whoopsied so probably cost less than £2 for the three and two portions in each. Lovely, healthy and cheap.0

Oh, I did sosmix plait yesterday! Today we had mushroom and tomato layer - DS1 said it looked like bird food, so DS2 refused to eat any
wretched boys! Fied up breadcrumbs, minced onion and added chopped nuts and herbs, then layered with chopped mushrooms and tomatoes before baking.

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for savoury snacks for my boys at school?
Its just a little tit bit during break time, the school facing cutbacks so more fruit etc for Y3's and above and my eldest is spending on snacks on his breaks so costing at least £3 a week.
So far i've made some flapjacks and muffins.
Planning to make cereal bar type things but i'm not about anything on the savoury side.
DS2 took in some carrot sticks with his flapjack. But thats going to become very repetitive in a short while.
Can't give them quiche as its very hot within the schools, especially secondary and my eldest said his friends milkshake went off in his by 1pm (lunch time). so i'm stumped!
I will be giving them fresh fruit but as its becomeing so expensive, went in Mr M's and it was £2 for 6 small clementines
Thanks for any ideas:)0 -

Hi there!
I'm sure others will have some more inspired suggestions but here are some of the things I give to mine (a mix of healthy & not so!)
Bag of carrot/celery/pepper/cucumber sticks/cherry tomatoes
mini sausages/cut up sausages/sausage rolls
Frozen froob type yogs (have then defrosted by lunchtime but not gone off!)
Flapjack/piece of cake
Fresh fruit
sandwich/wrap
chunks of cheese (normal cheese cut up, not cheesestrings or similar)
Leftover pasta/pasta salad
Cheap crisps (whatever is on offer when i shop) 2 days a week
Hope this helps, i know others that make cheese straws out of leftover pastry for lunch boxes but mine dont like them so i dont!
