Is it worth risking sucking up dirt etc from the bottom of the tank and ending up with it in your (new) car for the sake of a few ££'s?

thats a myth, the fuel is drawn from the bottom of the tank

besides even if there was crud in there, you could filter it

...and clog your mower up..

it could be a honda mower, that wouldnt get clogged
  • I assume this is a serious question.
Pop the bonnet, at the bulkhead find the two fuel pipes that disappear underneath.
find a piece of pipe that the return pipe will fit into that you can feed through to your jerry can.
disconnect one of these two pipes, start engine...if petrol flows reasonably towards the tank that is the return pipe.
if it doesn't then reconnect and disconnect the other pipe.
You will have to run the engine continually and the excess fuel that would hve been returned to tank will instead flow into your can.
Be careful obviously....and stand by for shrieks of indignation from elfnsafety devotess here who think money grows on trees.

Mine is a Honda Mower ( of course ) I still wouldn't put anything that has been in a Rover in it. :D

Negotiate a full tank on the new car, then you are 3/4 of a tank up.

As the title says "how do I get petrol out of my Rover 45" it is about to go as scrappage and still has a quarter of a tank of petrol in it.

    Syphon it out.
Most antisyphon devices are either justs a bend in the filler pipe (so a bit of twisting of the syphoning pipe may be necessary) or a gause which you should be able to easily puncture.

If you fail on that, drill a hole in the bottom of the tank and collect the fuel that. Well you say the car is scap and can't be driven.

Just hope that your drill doesn't cause any sparks, because that may well be the ultimate fix for a Rover.. :D

Petrol vapour is extremely flammable - someone walking past 5 or even 10 yards away who is smoking could cause the vapour to ignite.

Just to let everyone know I did successfully remove over 10 litres of petrol by attaching a hosepipe to the inlet of the fuel filter and turning the engine over - it was very slow and was done over two days as I had to keep charging the battery which was on it's last legs - but at least I did'nt leave much in it.

And just for information the gauge was on empty when I left my house for the garage to leave it 10 miles away - the warning light just started to appear - the first time I had ever seen it.

The car got there on it's own but just in case it stopped either because of no petrol or head gasket I had my other half following also to bring me home.

Apparently it was kicking out some very foul smoke and smells.

The day before taking it I removed well over 5 litres of mayo from the sump and the dip stick still showed some content though I don't think there was any oil in it.

Just as a sweetener I asked for and got the tax disc to reclaim the unexpired tax.

Is this money saving or just plain tight?

Be fair. The quarter tank of petrol is far more vavuable than any Rover.:D

As an aside, I think all Rovers should be part of the scrappage scheme. Trade in any Rover and get paid off. This would rid the roads of the wretched things, and hopefully their geriatric, befuddled drivers too.

And I would make it compulsory......:rotfl:
