I've found that a good soak overnight in Nappisan cures most stains.

Hi everyone :) my boyfriend has to wear a white shirt everyday for work but he also does a lot of walking, and a couple of his older shirts have got very dingy and grubby. I've tried using the whitening sheets from Dr Oetker, but they don't make a lick of difference.

So I'd like to try something more heavy duty like bleaching them, but I don't know how to go about it. I have a front loading washing machine - does that work for bleaching, or should I soak them in the bath or something?
  • Try soaking them together overnight in a bucket of hot water that you have added a good quantity (double what you would use in a wash) of a biological washing powder. Dissolve the powder well first, and make sure that the shirts are all under the water, weighing down if necessary (I use a saucepan full of water, as this is heavy).

Then spin and wash as usual.

If that doesn't brighten them up, resort to Nappisan, but this can damage the fabric.

I am sure you will get loads of tips but I always wash white shirt by hand as machine always seems to leave them grey. I use a squirt of lemon in the final rinse then put outside. Sunlight is the very best bleaching agent there is....good luck to you both!,,

bleach will make them yellowy.. or erode the fibres so they get holey. Soak them in net whitener or napisan that is what I used to do with grotty teenagers white school shirts!!

Get some Dylon White dye, a lot of cottons are grey and dyed white so bleach will turn them even grubbier and yellow.

Another tip is to rub a bar of soap over the collar area and cuffs of the shirts before you put them in the washing machine.

It's not money saving but I always wash whites in Persil and never add fabric softener.;)

It is if it saves the clothes. A box of persil is a lot cheaper than buying more clothes ;)
