thanks.SpikyHedgehog wrote: »I say the schools would set grey shirts instead of white shirts if they wanted them to look immaculate all year round ;-) . I find what works best for us is soaking in soda crystals overnight, then washing as hot as i can for that material. I also soak in bleach at the end of each half term. (& resist buying more ;-) !)
I saw some in ' big' Mr S the other day, but haven't in my medium size shop. Have you tried boots, or ask your local chemist to get some in for you.

i have pulled out loads of white stuff from my wardrobe a while ago with yellow marks, from smoking i think. i have a feeling there was an attempt to remove them using bleach as i fund them again today in a carrier bag all together in a cupboard. is there anything i can use to remove these stains or is it too late if they have already been bleached?0

a good long soak in a strong mix of biotex may work???? or even a couple of soaks. or even (i have used it before but be careful!!) babys bottle steriliser. i used it on whites, but dont get it on the fabric neat if its NOT white:took the colour of somethin that was light brown, and it was brilliant. it is like a form of bleach, and worked great on a pair of white jeans, but the stain (a biro leaked in back pocket) was hardly noticeable after. good luck with that one.0

i would bung them in washingmachine on a high was with plenty of powder and see what happens if no change soak in biotex overnight then repeat washing hth xxxC.R.A.P.R.O.L.L.Z #7 member N.I splinter-group co-ordinater

This thread should help:
OS way to brighter whites?
I'll add this thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

I have taken all my summer clothes out for a good bit of weeding out and a lot of the white items have yellow stains on them. one in particular a beautiful broderie anglais (apologies for spelling) maxy dress is still all white except for the 2 shoe string sraps which are completely yellow0

washing with bio powder and a bit of vanish usually gets marks out.
If they are plain white you could soak in a bit of net whitener or sterident or laundry bleach that will help.
I'd try the 40' wash and bio powder first though.. marks like this aren't usually permanent.. I've often dealt with them in baby clothes after storing between children.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
I'm guessing that the straps on the maxi-dress could be made from a different material to the body, though the label may not mention it as they're such a small percentage. If the straps are stretchy (knitted) and the body woven (broderie anglaise usually is), that's a giveaway.
If that is the case, the problem is that different materials age in their own way. If it was mine, I'd chop them off and replace them with some new white material.
You could even use contrast colour/design which you can (if you want) pick up elsewhere on the dress (e.g. braid round the neckline). The contrast route is a bit tricky as you have to be sure the colour won't bleed.
Don't know about the other stuff (I don't do white) but hope you can revive your lovely dress.0 -
I've been given the task of laundering our grandsons cricket whites. grass mud yuk. After several experiments I find a soak overnight in bio washing powder (Lidl) 2 scoops to a bucket of warm water then a long wash ,same powder and a scoop of soda crystals. Hung in the sun- another tip from a 3 generation washer of kits. His kit is synthetic not cotton.0
