Well I use a mix of bleach and water (tomato sauce stains are the bane of my life). I don't leave it too long on and then wash as normal. You can try leaving it on the line on a sunny day (if we have one ;)) as the sun as some lovely bleaching qualities, although may not be strong enough at this time of year.
I also use bio washing powder but considering it's baby clothes that might not be an option to consider. I confess some of my greying stuff I've never been able to make bright white again :o

After a long search for laundry bluing i came up with the idea, that the bloo blocks i put in my toilet to colour the water just might do the same job. I broke one up in a sandwhich bag, and added a tiny amount, a good bit less than a quarter teaspoon of it to a pint of water, and added as the machine was filling the final rinse. Works a treat. Care needs to be taken not to use to much. just a note this is not to remove stains but get that nice bluey white colour.

A tiny amount can be mixed in to the cheap type washing powders, this gives the extra blue boost you find in the big brand named powders.

You can get laundry blue here http://www.carbolicsoap.com/reckitts-blue-p-864.html

Haven't the toilet blocks got other things in them to clean to toilet? Things which might not be good for clothes?

Thanks for the link :) Not sure whats in the toilet boo blocks i was thinking the same as you about what might be in them, but then reasoned that it cant be any worse than using bleach. The amount you have to use is very very small so i cant see it being a problem.
  • What's the best way to get tea towels white, other than boiling them in a big saucepan? Mine have come out of the washing machine the same colour that they went in.

Would a soak in Stardrops help and if so, how much should I use? Or are there other OS tips I can use?

Dilute some bleach (a tablespoon or so) in a basin of cold water and soak the tea towels for a couple of hours (or overnight) then rinse well.
  • Did you wash them in the machine at the highest temperature possible? I'd soak them overnight in a dilute bleach solution like Moobah suggested. If you can find any direct sunlight, dry them outdoors in it.

Another vote for a soak in diluted Sardrops or bleach. Not both.

If you've got curry stains, sunlight is good. Turmeric is used as a dye as well as a spice, and it isn't "fast" in sunlight. (You don't want to know what they use to "fix" it.) It will take a few washes and "sunbathes" though.
