  • You'll all shout at me for this but I always wash my whites at 60!! But I never have off white whites;) and I use cheap powder and less than the recommended amount too! I'm convinced they need the heat
  • Hi there! We have an existing thread on this subject, so I'll add this thread to keep ideas together ;)

I know the exact feeling.I learnt when my were very small and I used terry nappies that they really do need a hotwash. I have maintained this practice since then. I am very stringent about seperating whites and I do a hot white cotton wash when needed. I use a biological powder for whites and if they are cotton I add some bleach to the machine as the water runs through the dosing door. I always wash white cottons on 90. I got over the environmental issues by consoling myself that by looking after the items I was reducing the need to replace.

Additionally I used old fashioned napisan for the nappies and muslin squares and still sometimes soak whites in this before washing.

For man made fibres I resorted to pre treatment with a vanish bar or other stain remover. I am sure someone on here can recommend an enviromnetally friendly version

Hi, I have a king size white blanket made from cotton on my bed which keeps me warm this winter!

The problem is it was stored in an old wooden blanket box for years and it has a large yellowish stain on it now (nice!). I love this blanks and would love to know had to get rid of the stain.

I have tried washing it on either 40c or 60c (can't remember exactly) with soda crystals and this did not work. The washing instructions say wash as cotton on 40c

Any advice please greatfully received! Also I can't find napisan anywhere as I thought this might work

If you want to stick with using the Ecover rather than a harsher biological powder I found that putting some Ecover Laundry bleach in with the whites helps to stop them going grey.

One natural stain remover that I wouldn't be without is Earth Friendly's Stain & Odour Remover, it even got curry stains out of my DD's white jeans! Their Oxobrite Non chlorine bleach is good too.

  • My favourite way of getting stains, including greyness from whites, out is to literally boil the items!!

If it's delicate, don't, but if you're going to chuck it out anyway, give this a go.

I put the item in my biggest stock pot [it's huge!] or jam kettle with cold water. If there's a specific stain I tend to give it a good rub over with wetted laundry soap - usually Fairy Laundry Soap - on both sides of the stain then scrub it on itself. I measure about a tablespoon of cheap plain washing powder over the clothing and then GENTLY bring it to a slight simmer.

It's easy for me as I have a woodfired range and it's always on, in winter, so I just put it on there and keep prodding it every now and then. When the water is filthy I just drain it all out into the sink, rinse the item/s with cold water and then wash them on a quick wash. This normally sorts out most things.

If you are still having difficulty and don't want to boil wash anything then I used to use the following formula with fitted [pretty] nappies and not only were they always white but the pretty decoration didn't fade either:

into a soaking bucket I would put
2 tablespoons of Miracle Acdo washing powder
    1 tablespoon of Biotex

I would "clean up" the nappies as best as I could in cold water, then put them to soak in the bucket, having gone over any "stains" with Vanish stain remover soap and a nailbrush. They were washed at a high temperature once a week and were always spotless and bright.

    Maybe I was just lucky!
If you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!! :D

If your baby stuff has already gone grey it's likely that they have been washed with something that isn't white. I have had two small babes, and recently got their clothes out of the loft for someone else. The whites are still white. They don't get enough use out of them to go grey. Specific stains I can't help with - sorry

I should have added that I didn't wash above 40 degrees and used Surf.
  • What’s the best way to get greying white clothes whiter again? I usually use a 40 degree quick wash on my whites. I have bought products before that you put in with your white wash, but I wondered if there were any OS alternatives/better products?
    Thanks in advance!
