Anyone pay BARCLAYCARD by cheque - but cheque "always " goes missing in post !

  • I pay my Barclaycard by cheque (call me old-fashioned, etc. - am I bothered?). I know that it will be banked with alacrity on the day of receipt and debited from my account in exactly 3 days - never misses. Occasionally I make a foray to a branch (postal strikes, etc.). (Incidentally, I once paid in cash at a branch and found that it is strangely treated exactly like a cheque and not credited until 3 days later.)

With the most recent postal strikes, I have been sending my payment much earlier - and found that it was getting there the next day/debited 3 days later - so absolutely no difference, strike or no strike.

I would suspect it is something to do with the Royal Mail and the local sorting office rather than Barclaycard... have the missing cheques every turned up?

  • Did you know, that if you pay Barclaycard online from a Barclays account before 6.30 pm, it is credited to Barclaycard that same day?
So, if you are brave, you can pay the balance above the minimum payment (which of course, was paid by direct debit) at the very last minute which could save on overdraft interest, if thats how you work your account.

I'm afraid I do see the posters point, how they choose to pay their bills is their business and if Barclaycard aren't processing them then it is clearly grounds for complaint as they chose to accept cheques for payment. If they don't want to process them they should remove the option like many internet based cards do.

I agree 100% with this post.

Fountainpen, ignore the holier-than-thou group on here who are so good at telling others how to live their lives.

If he wants to post a cheque he can do, Barclaycard offer it as a method of payment - it should work.

I am not trying to accuse RM employees of dishonesty, but I can recall watching a TV programme several years ago when loads of people paid their CC bills by posting cheques and a crooked postman was saying that it is very easy to recognise and steal the CC bill payments as they are always in certain distinctive envelopes. Are these cheques ever being cashed? If so someone is stealing them. If they are not then Barclaycard need a kick up their a@@e as something is happening to them.

I support the Op in this, I do not pay by cheque, but it is good to have that option if you want to.

The OP didn't suggest that the cheques were being banked, and not applied to their card, so it's unlikely that theft / fraud is the issue.

I find it crazy to suggest Barclaycard are deliberately not processing cheque payments. This would be scandalous for such a large institution.

If Barclaycard's admin is crap, and they do lose cheques, as much as this isn't acceptable, surely the best option is to work around the problem, particularly if ignoring it is damaging their credit score.
  • Are Barclaycard criminals?

They're unethical and greedy, but I wouldn't go as far as criminal.
  • I paid my bill yesterday by first class post, I posted in a Red Post box in prestwich, Barclaycard have acknowledged my payment.
  • Barclay Card are a waste of bloody time if you ask me, and greedy and unethical as was already posted. I agree with some previous stated posts, just cancel your credit card and use cash or a debit card from here on in.

Perhaps the OP believes that by persisting in this way they can escalate the issue and seek restoration of their credit files? In which case proof of postage may have served better than recorded delivery. As this would show that cheques were in fact going astray.

Of course Barclay card may well point out that they offer a number of payment options and an alternative should have been selected anyway. Personally I'd have switched to min by DD and cheques for the rest. Even if only as a temporary measure until the issue was resolved.

Deliberately seeking to incur a late payment fee and damage to a credit file just makes no sense.

When I had a Barclaycard-I was paying off the minimum for a while on a balance transfer. They upped my credit limit and kept pestering me to spend on it by offering 3 month zero percent deals. Then I started to pay off lump sums and lo and behold my credit limit was reduced ! They are shambolic.
