Why People Carriers?

I've noticed that people recommend people carriers quite often on this site and others when you've only got 2 kids ??

Several family sized cars will cope (Mondeo, Vectra, Saab, Mazda 6) easily with all of the bits and pieces you have to cart round.

Most people carriers have tiny boots anyway.

Great I can transport 1 or 2 extra passengers but not all of their baggage

If the boot isn't big enough on a standard car, get an estate....

I can't argue with anything you've said OP.

If you've 2 small kids, and therefore presumably 2 seat boosters, it's difficult to fit more than 2 adults into the car as well.

If its a people carrier, then accomodating more people is easier.
With most people carriers, its often quite easy to remove/fold up the unused seats to increase luggage carrying capacity if necessary.

Also, a huge bus on the school run impresses the other mums more than a Mondy ;)

Well I've owned a Spawn of the Devil Zafira and currently have a Mazda 5. :p

The reason for choosing a MPV over a traditional estate is really flexibility and 7 seats. We mainly use 5 seats during the week and all 7 seats for the dance run and gym run and the odd grandparents at weekends. Plus the old Zafira had a footprint no bigger than the Astra Estate which makes it easy to park. The current Mondeo, Insignia, 6 etc are much longer cars one size up.

Also the larger load space makes it van like if you fold/remove all the rear seats and you can carry kids bikes upright unlike in estates where you have to put them on the sides.

Its showing off and is the ultimate in Penis extensions:

"look at how fertile I am, I need 7 seats as my little soldiers are rampant"
  • If i'm ever in that position i'll buy an old mini bus for ferrying people about and a westfield for me. Cars aren't for moving people about the country in relative ease, comfort and efficiency.... they're for going fast and having fun.

I have a 7 seat MPV (an Espace) and 7 kids so I can only fit 5 in at a time with me and the wife on board  (I think I'm justified in owning a "Spawn of the Devil").

If I take all the seats out of the back of the Espace it becomes a van! Quite useful for carting stuff about.
  • Wifes got a Grand Voyager (and thankfully no penis, extended or otherwise).
Agree with the OP to a certain extent, but the grand voyagers one of the few 7 seaters with bootspace too.
And on the one or 2 times a year theres 7 adults in it, every one of them have a real and comfortable seat (not a deckchair that folds into the boot floor).
  • My mum has moved away from people carriers to something worse - a 4x4!!

We've had 3 Espaces over the years despite having only 3 kids. It seemed a good idea since both our mums are on their own and meant we could all go out or on holiday en famille. Unfortunately it also meant we'd get asked to transport other people's kids, sofas, washing machines, run jumble sale leftovers to the tip etc etc. "well you're lucky - you've got a nice big car" Favours were rarely returned as no-one could fit additional bods in their Astras or Mondeos. Life is much easier with a bog standard BMW saloon:D

Actually, I DO miss the versatility but Espace No 3 was a complete nightmare and spent most of it's time losing power on motorways with the sign "regenerate FAP" flashed up on its screen. Hideous vehicle!
