It has to be 100% legal, a shop that sells PCs with OEM or non OEM XP or any other manner of OS (operating System) has a licence agreement with MS to sell the product on the behalf of MS.
Dont go mental at the mo tho, I would phone MS via the numbers I gave on those threads and ask them if they have some kind of validation error bug going around on the latest updates as there are a few validation problems of late, dont say anything more than that, I would go back to the PC seller first and take it up with them if no joy grass the sods up to MS.0 -

By the way... do not format the comp... windows XP has a inbuilt timer that can tell date of installation, time of installation, how long it has been running, longest time it has been on how many times it has been booted and also keeps records of other installation factors as well. This along with proof of purchase will show you did not install the software but the shop did and you will qualify for the free copy and the shop will be in trouble.
Setting the date back and installing does not work to fool the comp as XP registers any clock/Bios changes at boot up or within the system . so you couldnt set the clock back 1 year install then put the clock forward.0 -
thx scooter ,how do you get in to this timer in xp to see the install datethere or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff0

I have received a message when I tried to start Comuter saying this copy of Windows is not genuine.
I was unaware of this as I paid to have it put on when I changed to Broadband. Can I still use it?0 -
If you paid for XP then you should have a key code or serial number, phone Microsoft on the freephone number provided.
They will help you.0 -
I do not have the disc or a code as the person who installed has moved to Germany.0

You can always get more with a kind word and a 2-by-4 than with just a kind word.0
