I've never installed anything but sp2 and I've never had any problems0 -

Mmmm that really isnt a good enough reason not to get the updates and did someone mis-inform you as there are quite a few critical updates that you need to close some serious exploits.
Your PC maybe riddled with spyware and keyloggers if no updates have been installed in conjunction with no AV or Firewall.
You Should get the updates, if you dont trust MS maybe linux would of been a better choice.0 -

I have a firewall and AV, and no spyware or keyloggers here.0 -

Ok then I believe you, just make sure to run AV scan in safe mode.
P.S Why dont you trust MS0 -
Had a load of problems where I worked when sp2 came out so I decided to stear clear of automatic updates after that, we also (until recently) had a download limit too, and being a home user I don't have much I'd miss to loose anyway, but I've never had any problems. Most of it seems a bit pointless to me anyway.0

I can assure you hand on heart they are not pointless at all, here are a few of my updates of late take note a lot if not all are for security holes in XP
Windows XP Security Update for Windows Media Player 10Windows XP Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 Windows XP Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.0 SP3Windows XP Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531)
Windows XP Update for Windows XP (KB900485)
Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB911562)Windows XP Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP (KB912812)0 -
I must say I agree with Quincy about crucial updates being important, & while Microsoft obviously have a problem with Pirated OS's I really think the denial of crucial updates, is going to mean everyones PC is going to become more vunrable. So I'd encourage anyone who can no longer get updates to google for hacks.0

***Board Guide Note***
Hi
Please don't post links or discuss circumventing Windows Genuine Advantage.
I realise with the recent change a lot of people might have discovered the copy of Windows they thought was genuine is actually a copy which is why I'm trying to keep theads like this open, but discussing ways to get around this would be clearly against the rules
thanks0 -
In fact you need MUCH more than the Critical Updates because of the ridiculous way Microsoft classify updates
Microsoft only declare something as 'Critical' if it effects the security of the Internet - e.g worm or virus related.
Something that might damage your security is only classified as 'Important'. So a big vulnerability that leaves you wide open wouldn't be 'Critical' according to MS0 -

Sorry sra, was hoping to pick peoples brains to find out what impact this would have on me using my PC - i.e. whether it only affects Windows updates or has a wider impact for the individual user. No naughtiness meant.A Fendi Baguette is not a sandwich.....
