Do I have a right to time off work for scan of baby?

Have you thought of having a chat with the other driver who has booked that week off to see if he would mind working that day so you can have the day off? is that a possibility?
What is your compnay's policy on how many drivers can be off at any one time? you need to be armed with this information before you go above your superviser.
On one hand you have said that your superviser is just 'bossing you about and he hates it because he can't as he doesn't have the authority' but how can that be the case if you need him to sanction allowing you the time off?
Please don't take this the wrong way but you need to be careful of your attitude when you speak to your superviser and the boss, you are coming across as quite arrogant and demanding that you get what you want, if you behave in this way towards your superviser and your boss then it is unlikely to result in them giving you the time off you want.
I completely understand that you want to be there at the scan, this is perfectly natural and no expectant father would want to miss it, but many men just don't get the opportunity to be there, not just men in the army!, yes it's sad that this happens but unfortunately when you have a job, there comes the responsibility to your work aswell and that does mean towing the line even if you don't like it, I'm not saying it's right but that is the way of working life. You have said you left the army because you were fed up of being told what to do, but holding down a job of any kind means you have to do what is expected of you.
I would speak again to your superviser but try to be reasonable and give a reasoned 'argument' as to why it would not be detrimental to the comany that you had this time off, don't just go off on one demanding and threatening to go above his head until you get your way as that will get you nowhere. If you could offer to have the leave as unpaid then this would mean they could get agency staff and it wouldn't cost them?
If it turns out you can't have this time off then ask which dates you would be able to take, and then speak to the hospital to see if they could fit your partner in on any of those dates.Aug GC £63.23/£200, Total Savings £00 -

He chose his job and I chose mine in civvy street and they were our choices so its a shame he will miss his baby being born but its his choice to live that life
Perhaps you might prefer to work for yourself then because when you are an employee being paid a wage by someone then that's what happens .
DH came to my early scans with both children, but didn't come to the 20 week ones (I had several) and my dad came with me. He's got a job too, can't say he's keen on it, but they pay his wages and he's obligated. It's only a scan, he'd been there to see baby for the first time on the screen and he saw the pictures afterwards.
Of course you could always "pull a sickie", get found out and lose your job with a baby on the way and work hard to come by.
JxxAnd it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end0 -
Hi Millie, just to answer you're points
1. Driver is off this week :D when he gets back I will mention it if I get no joy from head office he is a nice guy and I dont think he is going anywhere he is just using his hols up hence nearly 3 weeks off at once.
2. Company policy eh now there is a grey area it changes to suit. When he needs time off and other drivers are off its ok as he only drives a 7.5 tonner and it has no bearing on our jobs so agency is brought in. His own rule is no more then one off at a time but like I say only when it suits him
3. It is a weird set up at our place, he is a supervisor/planner. So this means he effectively "runs Nottingham depot" and sanctions hols and plans our day as far as our loads go. Mantenaince for lorry and sorting out loading and unloading of trailers/vehicles etc. My boss has told me himself I have only one boss and that is him and him only. But at the same time G is in charge of running things day to day. He has no qualifications for the job he was made up when they moved our jobs to Manchester and I was given my current job only if I passed my class one HGV test which I had to pay for myself or be given the boot.
4.My attitude has come across bad I know I gathered as much but at the time of writing I was fed up thinking about it, im not normally like this im just fed up of his attitude towards me at times and the double standards that he sets  I assure you my boss in London knows this im not a trouble maker and we have a good relationship when it comes to work so he wont think im throwing the toys out the pram so to speak he knows the history, came up to deal with it and it made it worse so I have taken to writing a diary of events and its getting time to get it brought to a head officially as I asked for the first time instead of brushing it under the carpet. This is just one more thing on a list 3 pages long of events so forgive my attitude but its not just this inceident that is isolated
5. I do understand that not all men can be at their scans and that is sad if they want to be there, I take life as it comes with all the bad and the good but as we are here for one time only I intend to make the most of what precious time I have left and my intention is to be at that scan no matter what. It is a free country and I have a right to do what I want within the law so im exercising that right and im going to it
6. I wont be going off on one I dont do that, only makes my case weaker if I do, I am gonna ask him for my leave request form signed as auth or non-auth and say I would like it before I decide on what action to take next. I wont be getting paid anyway as I have no annual leave left so I was never expecting to be paid for it im not that bad
7. My partner has tried ringing today and couldnt get through, or should I say no one answered. Depending on what they say will also have an affect on what I do next.
And finally, I dont think im asking much, im asking for one day off and being told no as another driver who drives a different lorry and also has nothing to do with my run is off. Its bloody pathetic. My supervisor knows how much this means to me but is such a !!!!!! he doesnt care about anyone but himself! He could easily get an agency driver in for one day to do my job so I can go along. How is my g/f gonna feel if there is bad news and im not there? She will be worried sick about how and what to tell me I should be there to support her and we can be there for each other good or bad.
Sorry for the essay I though as you took so much time to reply I felt it only right I reply to all of your points and hopefully paint a cleaer picture0 -

The sicky idea was a stupid off the cuff remark I never seriously thought about once I thought of what could happen as if I would be so stupid :rolleyes:0 -
You could always have a private scan the weekend before then your wife could go to the NHS one with a friend?

Do they find out/look for same problems as first one at a private scan?

No, they're not free lol
They will look at everything, the same as the NHS scan.
You can even get a 3D scan, where you can actually see the baby in 3D moving around.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
The words dolly and pram spring to mind.
What a wonderful atttiude that you will probably instill in your child - that authority, however 'powercrazy' it may be, can be ignored if you don't agree with the rules it makes.
And for the record yes my OH didn't come to all the scans when our son was born.2014 Target;

It will cost less than a days wages so if you were willing to take a days unpaid leave you will be no worse off financially.
If you start work at 4am, what time do you finish? Can't you book a late appointment and go after work?Proud to be a MoneySaver!
