Can everyone please stop bumping this thread up the list.
One inconsiderate person met another inconsiderate person on a footpath.
Who cares*, and what does this have to do with moneysaving anyway?
*Obviously everyone who posted except you.

Have some of these posts beeen removed?
post #150 from the person who thinks they run the forum was posted over 4 hours after the previous one ~ just wondering because they are complaining about it being bumped up, when if no posts have been moved, their post takes the pish.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
I ignored it, because being a forum the function of the board is to discuss a topic until it reaches its conclusion naturally, not when one poster decides they have had enough.
They always have the option of not reading or contributing, to something they feel has passed its sell by. That is a much better option than posting a dictat to others to stop posting. Oh, and it winds me up!!!0 -
At first I felt for you OP then I have changed. I originally thought the farmer should have politely asked you to put your dogs on a lead (but doubt that this would have made you do this ) for your safety and theirs. People are killed by livestock scared by dogs - there was a recent case locally of a vet who was killed in this situation so before you say - that wouldn't happen to me I am a famer's x,y,z and know cows - well no doubt so did this vet!
Your dogs clearly did frighten the cattle that is why they skittered off. As you are a country woman - you really should know better. Your dogs may be well trained, but obviously lots of others aren't and have chased these cattle enough for them to be scared and the famer angry. Do yourself a favour and keep them on the lead next time and you won't have this unpleasantness as there will be no risk.0 -

Yes OP ignore your own experience and advice from experts including on the case of the vet killed by cattle, do what including the case this poster I have quoted refers to. Obviously having read about that in as much detail as they have this thread. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

Hmmm, we seem to have a bit of a dilemma here. On one hand we have farmers who don`t like people who keep their dog off the lead whilst walking near livestock, on the other hand we have people who say they fear for their safety if walking near livestock with a dog on the lead.
Perhaps one solution would be not to walk your dog where there are livestock nearby if you must have it off a lead. The more I see of men, the more I love dogs - Madame de Sevigne0 -

Actualy it was a farming expert at the hearing for the vet who died who said to keep your dog of the lead. Also a public right of way is open to all and si part of the highways as much as the M8 motorway, so long as the dog is under control that is you complying with the rules. Farmers just cant make up their own rules. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

i thought it was quite simple, keep your dogs on the lead. If a cow starts to take an interest in your dog or you, and wanders over, let the dog go...only at such a time, especially if a cow chases you. But if not being chased then keep the dog on the lead to lower the risk of scaring cattle. I thought this, as already posted, covered the general advice given quite well:
http://www.nfuonline.com/x41618.xml
Do
• Try not to get between cows and their calves
• Be prepared for cattle to react to your presence, especially if you have a dog with you
• Move quickly and quietly, and if possible walk around the herd
• Keep your dog close and under effective control on a lead
Don't
• Don't hang onto your dog. If you are threatened by cattle - let it go as the cattle will chase the dog.
• Don't put yourself at risk. Find another way round the cattle and rejoin the footpath as soon as possible
• Don't panic or run! Most cattle will stop before they reach you. If they follow just walk on quietly:starmod:Sealed Pot Challenge Member 1189:starmod:0 -
So do you kneel down to let the dog of the lead as the cow charges or let it go risking it's lead becoming tangled somewhere and it getting caught by the cattle? The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett
