You should see the cracking mini's, 2cv's and moggy 1000's that were in our local breakers that had been taken in on the scrappage scheme, it brought a tear to my eye.

WHAT??? Are you SERIOUS!!! I think this calls for terrorism in the name of automobile heritage. I can't believe some people.0 -

I am absolutely serious, there was a mini cooper listed on ebay for parts ie. wheel nut 99p, I saw this car in the flesh and it was such a shame because they have to be dismantled. They had some other nice stuff too (Doncaster Motor Spares).
I think classic car magazine are trying to get the government to change the scrappage scheme to the American one where cars over a certain age are not eligible.
It's like antique dealers part exchanging their antique furniture for Ikea furniture,
it doesn't make sense to classic car enthusiasts.

Strange nobody commented on the fact the advert says white mini mayfair, DVLA comfirms this.
Yet in the picture it is clearly a red cooper? Hard to tell from photo's but i doubt that car has ever been white.0 -

I noticed, but the auction had already finished when I saw it so I didn't see much point in commenting on that particular car. There is a red one in classic cars on ebay at the moment and that one is clearly black! I hear warning bells.

a ringer! hardly surprising really. very easily done on older cars like this.and a million and 1 excuses if anyone even notices....work permit granted!0 -
I have two classic mini's (three if you count the one I've just given to my sons girlfriend), I don't think there is much middle ground. Either buy a "good" one or a doer upper.
I have a mint mini city (and I mean mint) that was bog standard, I have now added some nice wheels and chrome bumpers and grille, this is an ongoing project to smarten it up. The other cost £150 without engine and gearbox, floors like new, boot floor like new,
most of the body good with the exception of the a panels and sills. This is going to be a complete restoration. The one I gave away is a tidy mayfair by no means good but as it only cost £120 to get it through the mot I decided not to strip it to bits. My sons girlfriend absolutely loves it she's 22 and thinks it's the dogs ********!!

Do you, by chance have another son I could go out with?
I was rear ended a few years ago in my beloved "Mindy"- a 1275, slightly rough around the edges mayfair that went like...ahem...a sensibly driven car, officer.
I was waiting at a junction when a BMW 3 series driver behind me "thought I'd gone (luv)" and accellerated hard into Mindy in an attempt to get out before the oncoming car I was waiting for...
Mindy was written off, the BM escaped virtually unharmed- it's driver was lucky to...I went for the throat...
However, luckily I reacted fast enough and the mini was light enough to enable me to stop her before hitting oncoming traffic on the other side of the main road. It shook me up for a while- but I always have driven/ridden as though everyone else is about to do something stupid anyway, and it's saved my skin on many occasions.
We now have a 998cc Traveller on the drive, awaiting donor parts (coming from a friend who's on a Mini bender), welding and a respray...it's our 19 year old's first car, and will hopefully be done for when she takes (and passes, hopefully!) her test. It's no looker- I've nicknamed it "Munter" but it's already loved.
I'm now jealous & on the lookout to ditch my Mazzie 323F (which is a great car in itself) for something more...erm...Mini...
It's one of those things, you either "get" Mini's or you don't. They have soul :TOnly dead fish go with the flow...0 -
Lets be honest a classic Mini is never going to be as safe as a modern car. They weren't designed with safety in mind and and they're so tiny compared to a modern car you're always going to come off worse in a crash.
They are great fun though, there's not many cars for similar money that will put a smile on your face like a mini.
I own an old Land Rover and used that as my daily driver for a couple of years. Again it's great fun but I'd hate to have a serious accident in it. Especially a side on impact. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -

I commented that it was dodgy to buy a car which had had a respray. Think there must have been a reason to change it from white to red.
At the end of the day it is up to the OP whether they buy a Mini or something elseIt's nothing to do with me, but my opinion is he could buy a safer car for a little more money. Saxos are in the same boat, they are awful. I know, I had one, which got written off by some stupid old bag who couldn't see me at about 20mph  Dread to think what would have happened to me if she had hit me at 60 or 70mph
I don't think, no matter how safely we drive and try to anticipate an accident before it happens, that we can possibly avoid all accidents. I wish we couldI try and drive as safely as possible, but if some pleb veres into me on a dual carriageway and I get squashed between their car and the central reservation, there's unfortunately not much I can do about it
Apart from buying a safer car in the first place, then I may have a greater chance of minimal/no damage to myself
Comparing any car to pedestrians, cyclists etc is silly. Of course a car offers more protection as it's enclosed. You miss my point about it not mattering so much what car YOU'RE driving, but the type of car someone else is driving that may hit YOU. Though of course if some massive 4x4 or lorry crashes into us, even a very modern car would probably come off a lot worse.
It's all about damage limitation, and I personally will do the most I can to limit the amount of damage I could suffer as a result of an accident.
Anyway, good luck rev_henry, I hope you can find a decent Mini and have lots of fun with it, they are a laugh to drive!0 -

That very few 17 year old new drivers have tbh0 -
I think that we all seem to be forgetting that the original Mini was a product of British engineering at it's very worst.
They were unreliable, uncomfortable, oil dripping, rust buckets, which to add insult to injury, were / are a nightmare to work on.0
