The good thing I've found with the Dukan is that it does actually seem to train you and change your eating habits. Plus it's a long-term commitment, where you very gradually introduce a wider variety of foods back into your diet afterwards so that your body/metabolism can adjust (otherwise the weight would just pile straight back on). Then you are provided with guidelines regarding how to eat and exercise in order to stabilise and retain the weightloss - hopefully for the rest of your life.

Much of the publicity about it makes it sound very faddy and some kind of easy-fix "miracle cure", but it isn't. It requires commitment and work, and it prepares you for life after the diet.

As a female over 40, I started finding it very difficult to lose weight, but Dukan has helped me immensely. Even though I ate sensibly/healthily and exercised a lot previously (yet still managed to put on weight), I now have a much better idea of how to manage my weight since embarking on the diet.

Whilst I agree with your sentiments, Dukan has worked for me. You're right - any long-term loss must be maintained with a change in habits. Commitment and self-discipline are musts as yo-yo dieting will damage your chances of retaining a healthy weight in the long run.

Thanks for that, I'll have to look at Dukan a bit more and see what's in it. I'm aghast at most of the diet club/diet fad stuff as it's mainly pseudo-science and the teaching of bad habits (for example, the slimming world concept of a 'syn') for profit rather than dealing with the underlying issues and the relationship of the individuals and food.

    You're very welcome. :)

I remember you saying in your post that the calculated "true weight" on the Dukan website seemed rather low. If so, then I would adjust it to a weight with which you feel comfortable. The most important thing is to achieve a weight which you are healthy, happy and genuinely feel able to sustain. If you go too low, then you probably won't be able to keep it up. It's much better to be realistic.

Good luck! Hope it works well for you!

I know exactly what you mean. The danger is that food (especially certain types) can become something of an addiction or an emotional crutch. Someone has to truly want to lose weight and be genuinely prepared to change their life in order to sustain the loss. So many people believe that they can just return to their old eating habits (which were the cause of the weight gain in the first place) once they've slimmed down. Unfortunately, it just doesn't work that way.

One of the most important things with Dukan, I've found, is to read the book thoroughly. There's a lot of very interesting "diet science" and psychological help in there. It helps you to understand better why you become overweight in the first place and how to overcome that. Even more helpfully, it details certain danger stages of people's lives - for instance, the peri- and full menopause for women, and gives advice regarding how to deal with them.

There will inevitably be people who follow the diet and end up putting all of their weight back on - those who aren't prepared to make a definitive and permanent change. I liken it to giving up smoking. You must WANT to do it, and you can't lapse back ever.

    Hi Maman

Thanks for that. Have PM'd Mrs T to ask if we can have our old thread back. Fingers crossed.

Having a dreadful day. OH unwell and very, very busy with caring duties, taking him to hospital, had to drag myself round chemists for his meds and various paraphernelia and then a quick whizz round Sainsbury's before the snow starts up again. Snow and wheelchairs are not much fun.

Todays progress - very little to report.
No exercise yet - still sore from physio, will try a few yoga stretches later.
Beauty treatment - to paint toenails whilst watching TV later.

    What d'you mean no exercise???

Another tack for feeling less frumpy that I'd recommend is doing an audit of your wardrobe. It's a great opportunity for a clear out to charity shops/ebay. Because I've managed to lose a little weight I've found things that were tight/uncomfortable that I'm enjoying wearing again (This is phase one, new clothes will come when I'm closer to my target weight:)). Plus I wanted to see what was worth wearing and what could be 'modernised' with some accessories etc. I have a friend who has a very co-ordinated wardrobe of scarves that go with certain outfits tops and shoes that match well with things etc etc. Mine seemed to be a mass of black trousers of various vintages:rotfl:

Let's hope thread can be re-instated.

    Hi Maman

Had an answer from Mrs T and she was doubtful about resurrecting Fab to Frump thread. She said I needed to report to the abuse thingy. So, I decided to start a new thread and see what happens. It's called the Summer Solstice Sensation. I know, silly name but it was gone midnight when I started it and I'd had a bad day. Still, keeps the six month theme going.

Great tip about the wardrobe inventory. Shan't manage this until after Christmas but a great project for the New Year.

What do you mean donate to charity, half of my clothes comes from Chazza shops in the first place. (Ha, ha - can't get the laughing face to work). Having said that I volunteer for Scope so I do get some good bargains sometimes.

Well done you on getting into your old favourites. I've got some nice things hanging in the wardrobe. Pity they don't fit but they will soon.!!!

See ya over at the new thread.

OK so had to move. (Previously Summer Solstice Sensation thread).
No excuse for slacking, let's get cracking.

Winter Solstice Today which means it's now exactly six months to reach my Frump to Fab goal, lose two stones, smarten up, improve my health and fitness, look and feel a whole lot better.

Making small changes, baby steps, gently does it

    To lose 1lb per week
To exercise 30 minutes per day
    One daily beauty treatment

    Today so far

Exercise 3kms on bike - still to do 10 mins yoga/10 minutes
Todays treatment - used leftover oil from cuticle soak to condition hair

LL, I'm very disappointed that your thread got closed. I don't understand why you're not allowed your own thread for us to lurk on. I was pleased with it - it was exactly what I should be doing. I normally lurk on Familes and DFW threads and occasionally on Mortgage Free and they all seem to be allowed Diary threads.

Anyway, I'm glad I found you.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.
  • Hi Whitewing

Don't worry I'll just post on here. I know what you mean though - it does seem a bit odd, not very consistent. I had no idea that it would be such a no-no.

Anyway hope you are doing well.

I'm not sure what's going on but so far today I'm not feeling too good, I Feel a bit "flu-ey", got the shivers even though the heating is going full belt. Mind you, if I'm not able to eat it might help with the weight loss. ;)

Had lots planned for today, but what with the snow and maybe the flu coming I might just have to cancel the day.

Will do a bit of yoga in a minute, try and help stretch out a few of the kinks, see if I can get myself going.

Hi all, today is my sixth day on the dukan diet and it's going well. Had the usual bigg-ish "weight loss" after attack phase(4lbs so far, a lot considering i'm short and not overweight) and have all the ketosis symptoms symptoms of insomnia and a horrible tinny taste in my mouth!
I did try the recommended forums but found them to be a little hostile with snappy people who don't understand the basics of nutrition and that certain foods are not miracles.... so i'm back here in the company of people with common sense :) I understand even more now that often people follow a very restricted diet or meal replacement plan because they don't understand portion control or nutrition!
