I don't get it. The £50, £20 and £10 note has to be broken down into smaller amounts somewhere. If the shops don't want to, and the transport companies don't want to, how is the consumer meant to buy anything for cash?

Shops should accept it. They have the backroom facilites to keep enough change to deal with any note. The OP stated that the change was found in a different till. Bus drivers and train conductors don't have this access to extra change though.
By the way I know of one shop who raids the charity box when they are short of change. The charity doesn't mind as it saves them counting out the money. Although I wouldn't trust the shop keeper to put the exact money back.

When i worked in a shop we had regulars and they used to bring in 1p/2p sometimes £5 worth or more and if i was busy i would take there word on it and count it later (under the understanding if it was wrong i would not do it again) The way i looked at it they saved me carrying the change order from the bank to the shop :)

I lived above a shop for 2 years and did the same with the owner , had about 20 quid in change sometimes and told him if it was wrong let me know ( and id count it twice to be sure ) .

Also even let me have a slate if i was a little short of cash too , always paid back within a week. He was a very nice indian fella and also a local barrister so gave me all the gossip nearby :P

Thought I would just update this. :D
Ive not been to the shop since I posted this thread. My money is better spent elsewhere. However, at the minute we are really low on money due to our jobseekers claim not going through yet and its been 6 weeks so I had to raid my money box to get gas and electric because we ran out. So I decided to go to this shop just because they wanted change! :D
Well the guy ran my key and card through and then I handed over 2 money bags with £10 in each of 50s, 20s, and 10s. There was a different woman in there this time and she says to him "you can refuse to take it!" well he had already ran it through so he had to count it out. The look she gave me! If looks could kill lol.
If they hadnt took it I would have definitely kicked up a fuss or just plonked it on the counter and walked out because it really was all I had.
Anyway I think these women have some kind of problem, a smile for a customer doesnt go amiss! :rotfl:

I think buses are very different to shops. Bus drivers are given very little change and are encouraged to bank as much money as possible as regularly as possible so they reduce the chance of them to be robbed. Up until last year one large bus company in North West of England had "Exact Change" only boxes where if you didn't have the exact money you either had to leave the bus or overpay. I know some bus companies still have this. Also certain bus drivers don't have any customer service skills as when they started the job they were locked away in a box at the front of the bus and it was the conductor who dealt with the customers. Sadly some drivers would still have it that way.

Preston Bus by any chance? Once, just after Stagecoach bought them out I got on a Stagecoach bus with a tenner and the driver said he didn't have change for a it but the next one due in 10 mins did. Waited for that one and this guy didn't either! Really annoyed me, especially as when Stagecoach were competing with Preston Bus they had signs up which said "we give change".

I suspect half the problem with the 'I've got no change in my till' is the shift change, where employees are expected to do a 'Z ' reading and printout and count up their tills at the end of their shifts. Right pain in the what-sit if you're ten mins from cashing up and going home and someone needs change so you end up opening 3 or 4 bags of change which you then have to count.
Still no excuse for being rude though.

The end of our street is always busy with people visiting our local shop. Our village isn't that big, and there can't be that much "passing trade".
