Local corner shop rant

Hello,
Just got back a short while ago from our local corner shop which we use pretty much nearly every week. Tonight there was someone I dont remember seeing before serving some guy buying beers and she was saying she didnt have change and doesnt know what she will do if someone comes in with a £20 note.
I didnt think much of it really and we passed our stuff over to be scanned and my Husband passes me a £20 note which is all he had brought and I totally forgot it was all we had with us. So I go to hand it over and the woman says "I dont have change.." and then "and you let me ring it all through". She was really snotty about it then proceeded to bang about at the other till for a minute or two while every one is waiting and you could see she was being moody.
It made me feel totally embarrassed and uncomfortable, like I had handed over a £20 just to be a nuisance when I obviously hadnt. The way she handled it wasnt very nice and makes me think I dont want to go there again when she has been so rude! I think I may complain because it was totally uncalled for and not how I would expect someone to behave when someone is buying from their store! I just wanted to walk out as I was so embarrassed! Makes me not want to use their store anymore!
Am I being silly or is this complaint worthy? lol :o

I don't blame you at all - next time go in with £20 in 1p pieces and see how she reacts then! :D And before some clever cloggs flames me - yes I am quite aware that the shop would be within it's rights to refuse £20 in 1p pieces .

Whoever is at fault here, it isn't you and if she treats other customers like this there'll be more in Asda's car park and another corner shop with the shutters up.;)

That particular bit of legislation only applies to the repayment of debt - but a shop can refuse it wants for any (or no) reason at all.

I did say to my Husband we should have came home and gone back with pennies lol.
Im not sure why she was saying she didnt have change when it only took her a couple minutes of banging about with a scowl on her face to find some in the next till!

Why complain about a corner shop , i know many owners and frankly they wont give two f**cks about it.

Its their own fault for not having change.

That's not necessarily right. I run a group and take a £50 worth of change with me every week. Since the class fee is £4.50 and everyone knows that, you'd think the majority of people would come with a fiver, but no! This week I had 6 £20 notes, one after another. Unless I can afford to take £100 in change every week, which I can't, there's not a lot I can do.

Having said that, I don't make rude comments, just keep yelling out, "can anybody change a £20 please?"

If the shop is open in the evenings and there's no bank open nearby, it can be very difficult to have change if everyone brings a £20 with them.

That said OP, she was definitely out of order being rude to you. I'd have a word with the owner, I'm sure he wouldn't expect his customers to be treated in that way.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

If you want money you need to have change available or lose customers. Simple as that really.

I would have been inclined to take the £20 note back and cheerily instruct the checkout bint to "put that stuff back on the shelf for me love!!" and walk out.

This happened to me in Spar a while ago, I'd been to the cash machine and got £10 out for the bus, popped into Spar and got a bottle of drink, the guy at the counter asked if I had anything smaller so I said sorry, I'd just been to the cashpoint and that was all I had, he then stood waiting for the other employee to get off the phone, tutted at me, stormed off out the back room to get a bag of coins, practically shoved it at me, and then when I said thanks and bye he just ignored me and didn't say anything back. It was at about 11 in the morning so they should have had plenty of change, it proper wound me up.

£10 wow big spender! I can totally understand why the Spar would not have had change for a high roller like you(!) What next you pay a £1 for a 99p item and they ask if you have anything smaller as having a float containing 1p is utterly ridiculous for a shop.

Next time I would visit it would count out my money very slowly in shrapnel perhaps occasionally:rotfl: losing count and having to start again. Even thought the queue would build up behind me, the shop could not accuse me of having incorrect change.
