When will these old socialists learn?

Again the dying days of a Labour government and a union leader flexes his muscles because he knows he wont be there next time Labour get in.

"Stronger position than Arthur Scargill?" "more impact on the economy?"

We found an alternative to coal and there are plenty of alternatives to RM already.

really? how many letters are they delivering?

    Get with the times!!!!

Most post can be sent via e-mail or fax. There are already alternatives for sending parcels. There would be plenty of takers for a contract to deliver general post if the government allowed it. This entire situation sits perfectly with the desire of the government and opposition to ultimately privatise the RM which will happen within 5 years and now with the full consent of the public.

Monopolies do not work. Would we like to go back to the days of the BT monopoly, 3 months to have a line installed and you could only buy a telephone from BT!

"get with the times" you say
so the fact that there have been operators like TNT with a license to deliver for years isnt with the times?
if you say most post can be sent via email then why would anybody be interested in taking on the job?
alternatives to sending parcels? thats not an alternative to RM is it?
what exactly to you envisage for a privitsed RM? given the monopoly is to be broken?
if you privitise RM where will you post your letters? packets?
    who collects the mail?
    who sorts it?
    who delivers it?
in an open market each company would do all of these parts themselves wouldnt they?

Placed order with Parcel Monkey on Monday via Quidco (£1 cashback per parcel). They collected y'day from home in North Wales(via FedEx). Goods delivered today to Bucks area. Order tracked. SMS sent when delivered. Goods insured AND cheaper than RM. (Parcels were over 2kg). Offered free next day delivery service on all orders as we send 10+ parcels a week. FANTASTIC. Another RM customer lost.

I think what these strikes are doing is making people realise there are viable alternatives to RM for there parcels. People have used RM due to there convenience. Now people have had to go to other carriers they have realised they are just as easy to use with very competitive prices. A lot of people won't go back

but the whole issue is far larger than the parcel side(i know in this section it is)
parcelforce is the rival for couriers so its not really a comparison

I sell mainly books so email and fax are obviously not suitable. I also have yet to find any courier or 3rd party that will deliver a standard paperback for less, or even the same as RM.

Around 90% of my postage costs are less than £3, so no, for me there is no viable alternative.

As for current strikes I have had feedback for items sent 2nd class on Monday late afternoon. Whether that will continue towards the latter part of the week I don't know but I had post last Friday so maybe others did as well.

You've already used that one b4 cyberbob.

Fingers crossed they will reach some sort of agreement today to stop the drivers and mail centre staff losing more money tomorrow.
