    Hi

I bought a great mattress - bedlum beds (I have no link apart from being a satisfied customer). It took a week or so to be delivered, but they gave a time-frame for delivery (and stuck to it). As for the mattress itself, it is great - though our point for comparision was a somewhat rubbish miracoil thing that's only bit of support was the bar in the middle. It was cheaper than anything comparable from other online places, and drastically cheaper than buying from John Lewis/M&S. I cant remember what I bought - it was the pocket spring/memory foam medium firm option - double sided memory foam by the way.

Someone who ran a furniture store did tell me once that if you buy a mattress marked down from £1000 to £400 you are buying a £400 mattress - ie there is no such thing as a real discount.

re: Ikea - I have no idea about the quality (probably if I were 20 years younger than I am it would be an option). However, the sizes of the mattresses are slightly different to normal so you would be stuck buying fitted sheets off them forever (and having once been stuck in an Ikea carpark for 4 hours due to a traffic jam this is not an option).

It took me a long time to come to a decision about the mattress - mainly due to the bad experience with the miracoil one. I researched and looked at lots of different options - I will try and remember to post in another 5 years as that is really when the recommendation would be better. In the end, my husband's bad back that was being aggrevated by a bad sleeping surface forced me to make a purchase quickly. My only regret is not buying one sooner.

PS I'm also looking for a couple of shorty mattresses for my kids. We bought a great shorty bunkbed from argos but the matresses were truly dreadful. Size small single shorty (W)75, (L)175, (D)18cm if anyone can recommend somewhere to get such a thing I'd appreciate it.

    Hello
    lots of useful advice here.
I'm looking for a mattress suitable for big people. My dad is a big man, and he suffers from lower back pain, mainly due to mattresses sagging in the middle after 6-months or so. My mum's side is normally not too bad.
The one they have at the moment is being turned every couple of months, but to no avail.

I bought him cheap ones and expensive ones and they all end up the same.

Would a good memory foam, like tempur, be suitable for a big person? Or would they just sink too deep?

    Any advice greatly appreciated!

What was the make and model of their previous mattress?
What type of base is the mattress on?

If the mattress is pocket sprung, then turning it once every couple of months isn't anywhere near often enough (especially if like you say he is a big man). You would need to alternate between turning the mattress over and turning it around lengthways once a week if he is very heavy.

A reflex/memory foam mattress like a Tempur would be even worse. This is because the bubbles in the reflex foam layer would start to burst, and would eventually leave a dip in the mattress (this is normal over time with reflex foam). Also they are non turn, so they can't be turned over to extend the life.

Most independant manufacturers would be happy to make them to order.

I'll check the mattress when I can. But the base is a thick MDF board over a slatted bed base (king size). The board is still straight, has not bent at all.

I bought a pocket spring with double sided memory foam - it was a Romantica (make) - the medium firm rather than the medium - I think it is the Madrid.

You wouldn't expect MDF on top of slats to bend, but the springs will wear out if not turned often enough.
