    Thanks Tim.

My bed is actually a non sprung wood base- would it be better for me to get something else? If so how much should I pay for the mattress and base? I do need a base that I can slide drawers under as I really don't have much space for storage ..

If there is nothing wrong with your base, then there is no reason to replace it.

...does the type of mattress you get, not affect the type of base you need?

Also I heard if you got a sprung base it would make it feel more luxurious...

    thanks Tim,

If it is a slatted base, and the slats are no more than 3" apart, then it would be fine with a 2 sided pocket sprung/memory foam or reflex foam mattress.

If the mattress was pocket sprung only, then you wouldn't want gaps of more than 1" (but there is a way around that).

A sprung base would make a bed feel a little softer, and a bit more luxurious. But if there is nothing wrong with your old base, then why replace it? It's the mattress that is the most important.

    hi Tim,

The base I bought did brake a few years ago (where the base meets the leg) and I got a friend to hammer a nail into it joining the base and leg. It's holding the bed together, but not sure if this means it's damaged.

Also is it possible to buy spring slats for a base and replace the ones I already have?

    Thanking you in adavance,

As long as the bed is still sturdy then I can't see the point in spending estra money on a new one, when the money could be used to buy a better mattress.

It is very unlikely that you would be able to easily convert your bed to sprung slats, but why would you want to, when you like a medium to firm bed anyway?

Oh I think I get you- a sprung base would not give a medium/ firm feel, but rather a soft feel?

I think I will go and lie on some beds at showrooms this weekend and than order online. (also to see if I want a pocket sprung or foam/latex mattress)

Thanks heaps Tim, you've helped clarify things- it's so confusing all the info on mattress's.

    Hello everyone

Hope you don't mind me butting in but Tim gave me great advice some time ago when I was buying new beds. If I may though can I ask something? What are adjustable beds like? Am thinking of getting one for my old mum for her 80th birthday soon but I don't want to be contacting Craftmatic or anything. I hear they're a riot on the sales front and way expensive.

I did go to my local Ikea but it's getting done up and I couldn't get to see any adjustable beds on the go. Tim, any advice gratefully received.

I wouldn't get one from Ikea anyway, at it will probably fall apart.

There is a wide range of adjustable beds on the market. The singles start at about £600 for a good one, up to a couple of thousand depending on the mattresses and the features.

    Hi Tim
    I've just bought this
    http://www.coopbedshop.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?ProductCode=ECOMEA&BedSize=SUPKIN
and it has got a 'fully sprung slatted base'. I'm not sure about the size of the gaps between the slats though (it is boxed up and I don't want to put it up until we move house). So it looks like a 2 sided pocket sprung/memory foam is what I need, is that right? I'm after a superking and prefer a firm matress. The Ikea ones seemed far too soft for me. I have to say I'm a bit worried about foam - doesn't it get a bit hot and sweaty, like a camping mat?! If I don't go for memoryfoam, what is the workaround for a pocket sprung with slats - do you just put some hardboard down or something - or should I go for something with decent sized springs? I've got up to £600 to spend.
Any advice on what I should look for would be appreciated.
