Well done to all of you who have turned your lives about and seen how ,with a little foresight and a few tips, you can save such a lot .I have been a 'Frau Frugal' as my DD's have called me for most of my life as I grew up with rationing and the austerity years of the late 1940s-50s.But I have aslo picked up lots of hints and tips to save me even more cash .I live alone and sometimes because often the supermarkets aims more for the 'family-sizes' rather than the 'singleton' but in just the past couple of months on the grocery challenge thread I have cut my weekly shopping bill down by £20.00.I have tried and found excellent the fruit and veggies from Aldi's . I also think twice about just 'having a wee wander ' around the supermarket, deadly if your feeling hungry as well,as you buy stuff, almost on 'automatic pilot'
I think its great that even in these credit crunching times its possible to spend less and eat better.Well done to you all and especially you Kellylea, I only wish that there had been somthing like this around 45 years ago when I was a young Mum with a baby. You go girl, and I hope you continue to enjoy your little family and taking care of them so well. You sound like you have done brilliantly and you should take a big pat on the back for your 'lightbulb moment'

What a lovely happy post and well done you for taking things on board so fast and making such great changes. You have done really well! Thank you for sharing with us all and making us all smile.

I've had one of those light bulb moments this evening in my kitchen!!
As I stood there rolling my homemade fish cakes in their flour, egg and breadcrumbs, I thought to myself, never in a million years ago would I have allowed myself to get this mucky in making the evening meal!! Something would be brought out of the freezer and shoved in the oven in the hope that I wouldn't have much mess to clear up! Don't get me wrong I have always been pretty careful in what I feed me and my family but sometimes I would just look at a recipe and give up before starting, reading many posts and recipes here started to give me confidence and now, a year or so later, I cannot believe the massive steps I have made in saving money and becoming OS at the same time, so my first change would be I don't mind getting mucky any more, that includes in my baking too.
The second thing that hit with the lightbulb moment is whilst creating my homemade fish cakes I decided to tweak the recipe slightly, sacre bleu!!!! Before, that would have meant a complete hissy fit thinking that the whole dish would become ruined and the family would never forgive meso confidence in what I am creating has changed to.
Am I the only one or do others feel like this, would like to change a bit, have changed tonnes too
Apologies if this has already been dealt with but I just had to write about my light bulb moment!
Better get back to the probaby burned to a cinder fish cakes now :rotfl:

Hi chella,
Well done on your lightbulb moment! :T
I was brought up by a fabulous Old Style mum, so have always been quite Old Style myself. One thing that has changed for me since I began reading this board is that I have become more relaxed about life in general. Perhaps it's just me getting olderbut I now appreciate the fact that time goes very quickly and my children are growing up fast. So these days, one of my main priorities is making memories for them because I want them to have good childhood memories and a happy home rather than a spotless house and tea always on the table at six o'clock on the dot etc. Hopefully while we are 'making memories' they will pick up lots of Old Style tips that will become second nature to them too.

You've all changed my life
What changes have you made to become OS?
WHY are you old style?......
I'll add your thread to the first link once you've had more input to keep the replies together.

I only had my LBM in December 2011 and joined this site to help manage and start saving rather than paying off lots of debt. However, I find it fascinating all the different stories that are on here. just wondered what this site had done for each and everyone of you.
The main things for me are :-
1. I now spend time reading this forum when bored instead of spending and literally wasting money on Ebay.
2. See the supermarket in a whole new light, have started looking at prices (where it shows the cost per portion etc) instead of just buying what I want. I now see the supermarket more as an enermy than a friend and we must defeat them :rotfl:
3. Filling the freezer with yellow stickered foods
4. NO MORE TAKEAWAYS!!! We only eat freshly cooked meals which I am finding easy and theraputic. Plus had 1 takeaway since October fish and chips £10.50 for three of us OMG what a waste!
5. Packed lunches everyday for husband is saving at least £50 per month and £60 for daughter!
6. Overspending and saving, I am a shopaholic I cannot help myself, I get that burning excitement when I want to buy something and really do find it hard to resist, i have stopped going shopping now unless I have a list and only buy off the list, no longer visit the tempting sections of the supermarket and if I go to shop online I do a fantasy shop and then just before checkout click out. Funny but I still get the buzz as though I am shopping but get an even bigger buzz later when I think about the money I just saved as it is all stuff I would not have needed just wanted.
7. Set up a savings account  I am 39 and have never had one in my life before AND have even got money in there. Have somehow managed to save £300 this month, I cannot get to the end of the first week without running out of money never mind nearly to the end of the hardest and longest month of the year with money. This balance can only increase I hope :rotfl:
8. Been and bought insurance documents folder, receipt folder and important documents folder, so all documents will be in one easy to find place and means that when the insurances are up, I now know when to get my quotes and get the prices down as we NEVER shop around for them.
Thank you for listening
I just want to say a huge thank you to you all, you really are an inspiration. I never thought that I would be able to change my ways, and has definitely been the best and actually the most easy new year resolution I have ever made. i feel like a different person with a different outlook on money, so thank you again :ALBM - 3/12/11

I have to say, this site hasn't really changed my life - mainly because at the moment, we are very comfortably off and don't actually really need to worry too much about money saving...however, it has the potential to change my life because I know if things did change (and it's always a possibility - OH came home from work yesterday with the news that a couple of people have been made redundant) I am much better equipped to deal with being on a limited budget than I ever would have been before reading this site.
I also love getting to 'know' people (even if they have no idea that I feel like I know them!) and the supportive, community feel that this board has.0 -
