Going to build a desktop PC for our daughter but we have no operating system. Is there anywhere we can buy a discounted version of Windows 7 for her which is not an upgrade but a new install? She is still at school.

You can use Upgrade for new install, depending on your expertise. :)

Actually, even if you have the upgrade version, some of the upgrade paths require a full install anyway.

But we have no operating system so we cannot upgrade hence the reason we are looking for the cheapest way to install windows 7.

If you actually read the first link, in particular Method #3, it explains how to 'double' install.

You need to do a bit of reading/research, incidentally Microsoft appear to condone this, put very simply you install Win7, (Upgrade disk) but don't activate, then reinstall the same disk, i.e. upgrade.

Please read the first link all the way through.

Apologies if this is too complicated, I did say depending on your expertise,:) but it is a quite well known method of installing either Vista or Win7.

    Bit more reading, :)

If you are not keen on trying the double install method with an Upgrade version your next option would be to buy a copy of Win 7 OEM version.

The version you buy will depend on how much RAM you intend to install in the computer you will build. Generally Up to 4GB the 32 BIT version will suffice; Over 4GB you'll need the 64 BIT version. or if you want to go with the 64 BIT version from the start then a minimum of 2GB of RAM is required. Beware however, that if you have older hardware such as a printer, webcam, digital camera, scanner etc you'll need to check that 64BIT drivers are available for them - usually from the "Support" pages of the various manufacturers website.

This store offers about the cheapest prices (£74.01 INC VAT) for the Home Premium OEM versions that I can find:

Installation is straightforward. Boot the PC from the DVD Drive and follow the instructions. There will be NO problems with activation.

As I said, some of the upgrade paths require a fresh install anyway...
