Hi, I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask, however I am considering setting up my own freight forwarding company, and can negotiate rates which would allow me to offer a next day UPS delivery to UK Mainland address for £6.75 up to 30kg's, or £8.75 up to 40kg's Excl VAT I have 5 years experience in the courier industry with the UK Market leader, so believe I know exactly what customers expect and want from a carrier, regarding customer service, and delivery reporting etc.

If I could offer these kind of rates do you think I would be able to compete in the market with other more time served forwarders, such as Interparcel etc.

    Many thanks.

You say "cheap" but I am assuming you mean "good value" rather than the low price, several day to deliver options that are around.
My choice for "reliable" would be ups with gwizzcouriers at £6.89 + vat with £300 insurance. A next day service from one of the best couriers.

These are good rates but the same rates as these are available already including insurance but the more competition the better:)

That was quick your prices have dropped by 10p from £6.85 to £6.75 already since i posted my reply above - keep up the good work there is obviously still some fat left in the prices..
  • Hi, who would be competition at this level?, I have checked around, to identify my main competitors, I can see GWizz Couriers are slightly more, but not by much. I would be offering insurance included up to £500 if I go ahead, then would charge for Enhanced Liability over that level.

And would be providing a email service to advise once your consignment has been delivered, with POD.

I have only started to look into the options for this, to see whether it would be viable as a business, but really want to get as much feedback as possible, to see whether my ideas would go down well in this already fiercely competetive market.
    Many thanks

One problem you will have is persuading people that you are not Parcelbee MarkII, or any of the others gone before you who open and shut in quick succesion, leaving a trail of impounded parcels in their wake. You don't mention whether your prices are inclusive or exclusive of VAT, but I assume this is because you'd be starting from scratch and therefore not be registered for VAT initially, and this might not help with the fly-by-night impression. However, as kayster said, the more competition the better so do come back and post again if you do set up (although you'd have to be a lot keener than £6.75 to persuade me to give you a try).

ETA: To be a bit more helpful, I'm currently using Despatch Bay, up to 30kgs is from memory £5.78+VAT, carrier is DHL, I like the booking/records system and they supply all the mailing sacks/document envelopes/etc.

  • Hi, The prices are + VAT, I have listed this on the posting, I know what you mean about fly by night, this is definately something I would have to consider, however I am sure G Wizz Couriers had the same hurdles to overcome, and they appear to be doing well.

I dont think you would be able to find many other couriers for less than £6.75 for up to 30kg's, which is why I am hoping I could compete in the market,
however definately a good comment to put Strapped to try and get me to consider dropping the rates even more to aid competition ;0)
In all honesty, I dont think many other freight forwarders could get much lower than this, as it would take a hell of a rate through UPS to trade at less than this price.

I am hoping I can get this idea off the ground, but will definately not aim to be a fly by night, and hopefully with my experience I can offer a competitive service, with a high level of customer service also.

I think you are partnering with the right courier tbh; UPS are many people's courier of choice (they would be mine tbh but DHL are OK too). Best of luck to you and I hope we see some cracking MSE-exclusive deals posted here soon. ;)
