Thanks Searcher2 . The reviews I've seen of the 5100 are on the whole very good , and these were for , at the time , considerably more expensive . The lack of media card reader / ps2 ports , parallel ports , OS disk and software are fairly minor quibbles at this price . It also very upgradeable and for my own usuage i.e mp3 , pictures , office , web creation it should do the trick
Thanks again for taking the time to reply to my mails0 -
They have the 42VMWS in stock . It looks the same but the weight is heavier . Any ideas?0

Have just ordered one of 42VMWS ( after missing earlier one - doh ! ) . Exactly same title / spec but ( just checked ) 5.5kg heavier ?!! Oh well , not as if it will be moved about alot .................0

You can add a media card reader if you like. I am on the lookout for two... Scan have them for about £5 but am not sure how they connect to the PC... have sent an email to ask. It is becoming more common to not supply original OS disks these days. You can create your own recovery disk though.0 -

Don't believe anything on the website. The packing came with a slip saying it was 10kg. The weight can't be any different... it's the same model! Just weighed mine an it's a shade over 11Kg.0 -
Thanks searcher . It did seem very odd though 2 identical models - one 11.5kg the other 17kg !! Anyway its ordered now - I'll let you know how it goes . Thanks again
P.S I'm just relieved to have ordered it after missing out on first one by literally 10 mins due to not having my credit card handy !!0 -
hi everyone - a question for techies and for searcher
On Dell website I can get a Dell Dimension3100 for the next 2 days for
Intel Celeron D
3,2GH
1024mb ddr ram
80gb h/d
dvdrw
17" flat monitor
no floppy
integrated graphics card
for £399 incl delivery
The DABs one that searcher bought (have to give price for the Works suite one as the other is out of stock) seems to be
Dell 5100
Pentium 4
3.0GH
516 MB ram
160 gb h/d
17" flat monitor (add it on separately)
floppy?
graphics card?
works suite
for £395 incl del
I don't know anything about pc specs ot techy processor stuff , so is the 160gb h/d the only thing about the dabs one that's better than the dell one?
Also, if I use broadband, is there anything nowadays that I would need a modem for or do broadband places give/sell you their external modem nowadays?
thanks all0 -
Chloe99,
Glad you didn't include me as a techie!
The 3100 is only a Celeron processor, whereas the 5100 (or more probably 5150) is a Pentium 4 which is a better processor. The 5100 also has a graphics card albeit a fairly basic one - which the 3100 doesn't....this means you have the option to add a monitor with a DVI (digital) connection and will have better graphics with the 5100. On the plus side the 3100 has more memory - though there are only 2 memory slots which both be taken up with the 1Gb RAM shipped... the 5100 has 4 memory slots so can have twice as much memory/RAM. In short... the 5100 is a better buy as it more expandable and is a sexier looking machine anyway!
You won't need a modem if you are using broadband - the modem provided with mine is only of use for dial up (non-braodband) users... and if you are a new broadband user most ISP's give you an external modem.0 -
he he he!!! didn't mean you weren't a techie really (squirm.....cough....shuffle.......)0

Whilst Chloe is still coughing and squirming (!) I'll ask another dumb / techie question. I ordered the one with 512MB RAM, is this likely to have one piece or 2 256MB pieces, I would like to get mine up to 1000MB do I just buy another 512 block or what - hey did that sound like I knew what I was talking about!!!!!! I thought not!0
