Hi Searcher2.
I can't exactly remember the sequence of the original start-up but I seem to recall that something popped-up about the time zone/region setting and when I checked it was perfect - time, date, time zone, automatic daylight setting, which I thought was strange because when I've had to reinstall the OS on my old computer after a format, I've always had to adjust the time zone setting and tick the automatic daylight setting box (W98SE & W2K). This is my first experience with XP and assumed that that had been taken care of now.
I've now had a look at Dells Support Page http://support.dell.com/pcrt and I've concluded from that, that I should have been able to make a recovery disc. As you say - I'll have to take it up with Dell.
The box that the unit was supplied in shows no sign of it having been tampered with before it got to me.
I'll speak with Dell and revert with their response.
Once again - many, many thanks for all the help that you've provided me.0 -
Hi again,
By way of a quick follow-up; Dell tell me that the department I must speak to is closed for the weekend, and they have suggested that I phone them back on Monday after 0900.0 -
By way of an up-date from my last post.
Last Saturday I faxed a letter to Dell asking them to change the address where the computer is, confirmed the warranty ending date as being Feb 2009 and asking if they can supply me with a set of Recovery Discs.
I've spoken with the Technical Dept at Dell today and ran through the same items.
They've confirmed that they have now changed the ownership of the computer to me at my address, that the warranty does indeed expire in February 2009 and that they're going to send me a complete set of Recovery Discs, FREE OF CHARGE.
Apparently, I should receive the discs in the next 5-7 days.
I have to say that I was very apprehensive about the outcome of my call, but they really couldn't have been more pleasant and helpful.
At the risk of over emphasizing my gratitude, many thanks again for all your help Searcher2, and my thanks to biglugs for his input.0 -
This post may not now be seen, but in case someone reads this, and by way of a final update, a full set of Recovery Discs (7) from Dell dropped through my letterbox this morning (Wednesday) - according to the postmark they were posted on Monday.
I don't know about anyone else, but that's what I call fantastic customer service.0 -
That is good service.
I'd just like to see the Dell PC I ordered 2 weeks ago from BT to appear on my doorstep.......with or without recovery disks :wall:0 -
One thing I wanted to ask, did the Dell 300 come with 3ry warranty aswell? I've received the HP one instead and there's no mention of 3yr warranty.0

Sorry nads - it's not clear to me if you're asking about my posts, but if you are, Dell has verbally confirmed that the 3100 that I bought from BT does come with a 3 year warranty from the original date of supply to the original 'owner' i.e. Westcoast Ltd
As a matter of interest, the base unit that I've got is as shown here http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/shop/detail.asp?ProductID=3388&CategoryID=203&SubCategoryID=279 except mine has MCE installed and the case is slightly different, and you will see that Morgan Computers say that theirs come with a 2 year warranty.0 -
Thanks for the reply, it was the 3000 (the £129\£149 PC) I needed info.0

Arrgh. Does anyone know the correct tel no/department because I've just spent 30 mins going around in circles with dell trying to get the ownership changed.0 -
Has anyone managed to fit a "internal card reader" to the Dell 5150?
I purchased the Dell 5150 under the BT offer and purchased an internal card reader from "Savastore"
http://www.savastore.com/productinfo/product.aspx?catalog_name=Savastore&product_id=10285925&pid=44&rstrat=0
It fits perfectly in the "3.5 inch bay" under the CVD Drives, HOWEVER the connector to the motherboard on the reader is not compatible with the connector on the motherboard.
From Googling this seems to be problem occasionally identified by others on the Dell 5150 mother board, i.e. Dell appeared to have used their own design of connector rather than a "standard" one.
Has anyone had any better success than I have in fitting an "internal card reader"?Money Saving Fan.0
