Just need to get my head around windows XP, and how many of the 35 or so possible windows updates I really need to install!?!
At the very least you should install all the ones labelled "Security" or "critical" updates. Other than that it's your choice. Personally I always keep my machines fully up to date, but some people prefer the "if it ain't bust, don't fix it" approach.

Many thanks to BT Shop, everything eventually got sorted out! and have now got an HP machine instead of the Dell. To my shock, when i checked, the 'upgraded' HP machine was lower in grade than the origional pc! But it was sorted out quickly today by Claire, and i was compansated to allow me to upgrade the machine to the right specifications, and given a refund on delivery charges.

Thumbs up for Bt shop, they managed to get everyone sorted out

    Hi,

I'm expecting my HP in the next couple of days and Clare has refunded me the delivery cost which is a good job from BT. Only thing now is will my HP be lower spc too? :rotfl:

Has any one sucessfully managed to get the warranty transferred over, either filling in the form or calling dell direct? I have limited previous customer details on the outside of my box and wondered how you've got on. Just call me pessemistic (if thats how you spell it!)

Yes they have had them transferred successfully.... someone rang up and got them transferred no problem.

And Nads - depends what you ordered as to whether the HP is a lower spec or not.

    Sadly I'm not sorted yet....
I had a call from BT following an email I sent asking when my Dell 5100 was to be delivered. They said there are some problems at the warehouse which they were sorting asap but no mention of not being able to supply the said computer & I should hear something in the next few days.

Cat, out of curiosity which model HP system was you supplied?
At the moment I'm not sure whether to cancel my order or see what BT has to offer if they can't supply the Dell.

Wilbur - I certainly wouldn't cancel your order unless you are desperate to buy another PC from somewhere. Most people seem to be getting a better system than ordered and/or free delivery. I think the HP systems were offered to people who ordered the low spec Dell's (around £129) and were the ones available from the Dabs website at £199.99 + delivery.

Hi Wilbur, I wouldent advise cancelling your order yet either, though when i spoke to claire on the phone yesterday, she did say that they had ran out of machines to send out.

The Desktop i recieved was the HP 3000, though the week before an irish guy had told me he was going to send an upgraded pc, with 500mb ram and 2.6ghz , when infact i recieved the 256ram and 1.8ghz cpu. this meant that the machine that was sent to me was of a lower grade than the origional pc, because the cpu would have actually been slower than the origional dell, and there is no way of upgrading that!

Ok, so phoned up Dell, and despite the small matter of a language problem, I have managed to get my Dimension 5150 details transferred into my name and address, with comfirmation from the operator that I have indeed got Complete care untill Feb 2009. Now I am VERY happy. :j
I wish all who are still waiting for their systems a speedy & satisfactory outcome, and that they too will soon be very happy.

I'm sorry to be a pain, but can someone clarify something for me. (Please accept my apology if someone has already asked the following questions)

Recently I bought a Dell 3100 from BT. There's nothing in the paperwork supplied to tell me for how long the computer itself (not the software) is guaranteed for. I've entered the Service Tag number onto Dells site and its given me two periods - one for CAR which is for 12 months from the original supply date (Feb 2006) and the other shown as Initial Next Business Day for a period of 3 years from the same supply date. According to the box the computer was shipped to me by Initial City Link next day delivery, if this has any bearing on the matter. My confusion seems to get worse as I'm of the opinion that guarantees normally commence from the date of supply to the end user.

Also, can someone confirm whether or not Dell will repair the computer (should it go wrong) as it was originally supplied to an address in Reading, Berkshire (which is not shown as being a BT address, although I have a receipt for payment from BT in Gateshead).

And does anyone know if Dell will supply me with a set of Recovery Discs.

Interestingly, the computer supplied is not exactly as described on the internet site. According to that the computer should be fitted with a DL DVD Writer, but I think the one fitted is not DL and the OS is supposed to be XP Home but the one installed is XP Media Center.

*Sorry, I have a correction to make - the DVD RW fitted is an NEC ND-3530A which, I've now found out, is DL
