I was under the impression that PC companies like Dell would refuse any warranty work if you'd messed with the PC yourself, even if you were competent to do so. e.g. add new memory chip and the hard disk fails they would reject your claim. Any more details on how this doesn't affect the warranty?

Just checked the website and "out of stock" has been removed from all pcs apart from the basic £129.99 one.

So maybe they've got more stock:confused:

I have been buying from Dell for a few years and checked about the warranty back then. From memory (it may have changed) you could add things to your machine and it wouldn't invalidate the warranty. Dell in fact go to great lengths to document the procedure to add new hardware on their website. Where it gets tricky is if you add software as this could mess things up - but from the hardware side you can add what you want as long as it is compatible with the machine and you don't damage any original Dell parts in doing it.

EDIT : From the DELL forum (which I keep mentioning as being useful!)...

"Generally, adding software, external devices, accessories, or parts to your Dell system after the system is shipped from Dell will not void Dell's limited warranty. However, the Dell limited warranty does not cover damage due to external causes, such as problems caused by the use or parts and components not supplied or installed by Dell. Accordingly, you may be asked by a Dell technician when troubleshooting problems with your system to remove any items added to your system after it was shipped by Dell. If the device doesn't function when installed, Dell can only offer limited support on that 3rd party device. Of course, those added items would have their own manufacturers warranty. "

OEM RAM manufacturers always put that on the modules and it means that the warranty on the stick of memory itself is void if that sticker is removed.

I agree - it's if the sticker is removed!! Otherwise it would be pretty daft - as you can't read the sticker unless you remove the memory module. :-)
  • Can anyone who has a 5100 answer some questions for me, pretty please? :D

Are there any spare PCI slots on the MB for my TV tuner?
Does it already have an NIC for my cable modem?
How many USB ports are there?

I've previously managed to install an NIC and an HDD on my current machine, but I found the whole experience extremely frightening and I'm not sure I want to put myself through that again! So I'm hoping that the transition will be quick and pain free

And err ... blush & eek!!! :o

I'm still using windoze ME, where can I get lots of decent free software to use on XP? My main priority is obviously security but I currently use AVG and ZoneAlarm as well as spyware stuff, I should imagine that I can get XP versions without too much trouble..? I'll really need an email client, and photo-editing software to start me off.. I'm sure I'll find lots of other stuff that I "need" too!

I have a 5100 and it has two PCI slots, one of which has my TV tuner in it. It has a 10/100 Ethernet port which my modem/router is plugged into. It has 4 USB ports on the back and two on the front.
It also has 5 sound inputs/outputs but I only use 2 of them so not sure what the rest are for (presumably for people with more speakers than desk space?)
Don't know about AVG but ZoneAlarm is easy to get for XP. You should find the move from ME to XP a whole new world.
I have had my 5100 for about 6 months after having built about 7 or 8 machines for myself, kids and family and I have to admit it's a far better piece of kit than I have ever put together and worth every penny.

Thanks for the info on warranties - maybe my machine still has some protection after all! My only concern is what if I sell the X300SE card that I ripped out of it on day 1 then have to send the box back because it fails? Presumably Dell wouldn't be very happy.

I ordered one of the £229 5100's (Quicklinx 42VMWS) from Dab's on Sunday, when availability was listed as '1-2 days', which changed to 'out of stock' shortly afterwards.

I received a notice of delivery email late last night and it should show up today. So even if it listed as out of stock it still seems worthwhile placing an order.

So we have to see exctly what spec machine shows ups .....................

    Cheers,

    Steve.
