i have a slow cooker which is a crock pot which is made from earthenware (i think) and we also have a couple of those small tapas teracotta dishes, which are also earthenware type material

ive noticed with both of these items that after being cleaned thoroughly, they go in the cupboard and then when i get them out to use, they have mold growth on them, why woud this be and how can i stop it

this is both when they are thoroughly dry, also whether its been in the dishwasher or by hand and we use anti bac washing up liquid

The only time I had something like this happen was when I lived in a very old house, no foundations and no damp course, when it rained the flagstone kitchen floor was wet as the damp seeped up through. I had to stop using the bottom cupboard as all my plates etc came out green

Could you put them in the oven to 'sterilise' them/100% dry them out after washing?

Put them next to a salt/silicon packet to keep them dry?

^ that. And put an open bowl of salt in the cupboard.
Standing the bowl on cling film or a carrier bag will stop damp coming up into it.

Are these the type of pots with glazed top and earthenware base? If so, put in the cupboard upside down - it will let the air get to the base and stop the mould forming.

I get the same on my tapas bowls in Spain and at 40 degrees out there it is not just damp that causes it!

yes the tapas bowl is like that and its normally underneath a load of other little dishes so there wouldnt be any air. this is in a cupboard on the wall though so theres no damp

the crock pot i always store in the base cupboard in its slow cooker base. its only recently to be honest that ive had the problem, i never noticed it a year or so ago

Is the cupboard next to your cooker? I've found that the base cupboard next to my cooker gets damp when the oven is on.
  • Stick a couple of those damp crystal holders in there.
I had to do that with my corner cupboard as it gets a lot of condensation in it.
I had mould on a couple of the dishes too but that stopped with the crystals.
Probably just condensation, mould will grow on anything if its static for long enough.
