    Hi guys and gals,

despite being a regular visitor to the site this is my first post here, so lets hope it goes well.

Basically I'm looking for a new laptop but have a budget of £800 (+-£50) so can stretch a bit more than the cheapest bargain laptop. (although I'm more than happy to spend less!!). The plan is for a desktop replacement type, so can be used for work but also will be multimedia capable, and something which will last me as long as possible.

Having read through some of the posts on here i quite like the look of the acer aspire series here (http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_16801690_Laptops/prod.asp), the 1691, or maybe spend a bit more and get the 1693? Any words of wisdom?

also what's difference between the graphics cards and extra memory (the ati radeon x600 or x700) is it worth the money?

And processors? worth the extra speed? should i also consider AMD versions. the 5014 and 5021 i think are roughly the equivalents, but for less money?

lots of questions, i know, but i'm hoping you may have lots of answers.

    cheers

    Fingers

I'm (well my partner but I'm doing all the leg work, I will hopefully get a new laptop one day) going to get the Acer Aspire 5014WLMi so I let you know what I think to it. I chose it over the others as the spec seam to be more in line with a desktop replacement laptop. I also found this review and comparison of this laptop which mught help some. (I had to register to view it)

It's OK but not a spectacular price. You should budget for an extra 256mb of RAM. For a similar price you could probably get something with a DVD writer and 512mb RAM. Here for example.

Not that I'm recommending this one particularly.

This was the laptop that I had found yesterday & was considering buying - never heard of ACER before though. Do you think it is worth getting? Also, any sites that offer cashback/free delivery on comet? I thought linemypocket.co.uk might, but their offer at the moment is for currys (5% cashback & free delivery!).

    Help!!

    Hi,
Does anyone know of any 14 or 15 inch Widescreen laptops going cheap at the moment? The best I've found so far are the:
    Acer AS3502WLMI - £499 at Comet
    Acer AS3503WLMI - £484 at Shopacer.co.uk
    Packard Bell R4622 - £499 at PCWorld
    Fujitsu Amilo L1300 - £499 at PCWorld

I know I can reduce the price of some of these using various discount codes/cashback offers, but just wondered if there are any better deals available?

    Thanks,
    Craig.
