The Great 'Cheapest Decent Laptop' Hunt

Hi there I have been looking at the acer's but heard that they all though they are high spec the build quality is very cheap hence the low price tag for the spec. I'm looking to buy a laptop and have about 400 to spend. Seen this http://vaio.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProduct.action?product=VGN-NS20E%2FS&site=voe_en_GB_cons&category=VN+NS+Series&assetid=1218032875460 on amazon, did a bit of digging around and did some camparisons against similar spec acers, hp's and toshiba's and this had the better write ups and user reviews. Would appreciate a view from your knowledgeable people here to see what you think. Amazon are selling for 457, by the way.0

I've never had any problems with acer laptops, if I was in the market I'd probably end up with one of them.0

Saw this Toshiba L300-1BW advertised in Staples for £284.99. Is it worth getting? I know 1GB of RAM is light but I only want to surf, email and use Word and Excel most of the time.0

Get it at that price, cheapest price I can find for it, ram upgrades if you need it are easy and cheap. Good find.0

Price is excluding VAT sadly on website- actually £331.14. Would have been perfect for me! Thanks tho0

I turned it on... it didn't work lol. Could only get to the 'setting up Vista' stage and even then I noticed dead pixels... wasnt impressed at all.0 -

It wasn't a Toshiba was it? I was looking at one that was sold and has suddenly come back into stock!"fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts." (Bertrand Russell)0 -
I personally bought a
Acer TravelMate 5520-6A1G08Mi - Athlon 64 X2 TK-55 / 1.8 GHz - RAM 1 GB - HDD 80 GB - DVD±RW (+R double layer) / DVD-RAM - Radeon X1250 HyperMemory
for £225 (+£5 delivery) which was a bargain.
I only use it for internet/word document etc....but for the price, it's kinda powerful.
Not sure if there's a similiar product available but you can get similar products for £250ish.
I do have a question however, what other manufacturers do people solidly recommend on Laptops?0 -
Hi all
I hope I am posting this in the right place. I need to buy a new laptop on a tight budget. i have found this http://www.staples.co.uk/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?Description=UK_CL_Laptops+-+HP&CatIds=21797,35750,90633&webid=398539&affixedcode=WW+
please could soeone have a look and let me know if it is ok?
It will be needed for internet usage at home and travelling, running microsoft office (mainly publisher) etc...
Any advice gratefully recieved as i dont want to buy the wrong thing.
ETA I like the lightscribe dvd writer and was thinking of buying an external one recently, so this would save me that.0
