I am just about to buy the the dell £349 laptop as it is the best deal I have seen by far, but I was just wondering if it was worth upgrading to the intel core 2 duo processor and to 4MB ram for an extra £80?! Will it make it a lot faster and slighlty more future proofed?
Thanks0 -

You will never future proof a computer (might even be a new system called windows 7 at the end of this year) There is now a quad processor available and RAM is going up all the time. I personally would stick to the base price of £349 as it is a very good set of specs for the price against a very marginal performance improvement.0 -

Thank you for replying, I will just go with the base spec as you suggest.

I'm looking to buy a laptop and have about 400 to spend. Seen this http://vaio.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProduct.action?product=VGN-NS20E%2FS&site=voe_en_GB_cons&category=VN+NS+Series&assetid=1218032875460 on amazon, did a bit of digging around and did some camparisons against similar spec acers, hp's and toshiba's and this had the better write ups and user reviews. Would appreciate a view from your knowledgeable people here to see what you think. Amazon are selling for 457, by the way.
Just to say, went with this laptop and very pleased with it. A great bit of kit. Once you've set it up and taylored it to suit your way of working it's brilliant. That's when I get to go on it and kick the kids of it. Only 1 grumble though and that's the battery life which is about 2.5 hours. I guess this is in keeping with most lappys but as this is my first I'll have to get used to it.0 -

There's a similar spec HP laptop on Ebuyer's site, £299 including free delivery and very well reviewed:

i am also looking for a laptop, im currently using my dads spare old dell c500/c600. its actually not bad for an ancient laptop and runs xp fine. battery lasts well too. got me thinking, why not save some money and buy a used laptop from ebay?
i am going to have a proper look but it looks like you could pick up a similar laptop to what i'm using now for under £100.
for a new laptop, novatech sell one without operating system for £320 inc vat. which isnt a bad deal if you can get your own copy of windows/linux cheap.
by the way has anyone got one of the dell's on offer in tesco at £349?0 -
I often wonder if anybody reads through earlier posts. Take the one above suggesting Dells offer of £349 through Tescos. This same one can be bought from Dell direct for £329 or for £349 you can get a from Dell a laptop with much high specs. (As in the earlier posts) Linux is a free system and can be downloaded in various forms but is only used by about 10% of people. Then again why buy a laptop with similar specs to save money when you can save even more money by not buying a second hand laptop.0

Help please
I've looked at so many laptops my heads buzzing :rotfl:
I get paid on Wednesday, can afford £350 - £380 tops for a laptop. The desktop is going upstairs to be used for downloading etc so we're not going to be using the laptop for that. (OH's moving the desktop upstairs on Saturday as the new sofa is coming and there's to be no room for it downstairs so need my laptop asap!)
My brother says Acer all the way, my friend says Dell. I personally have never even used a laptop before so have no idea :rotfl:
Ok, so what do I need to use the laptop for I hear you ask? Surfing the internet, opening lots of competition tabs at a time on Firefox, the odd bingo game. Also general office applications, like Word and Excel and basic photo editing. OH will be using it for roulette games etc but no heavy gaming going on.
Most of all, I don't want an ugly laptop
Is it relatively easy to replace Vista with XP? I have XP on disc that I have on my desktop at the moment. OH reckons it'll be easy but he isn't a laptop user! I haven't actually used Vista and don't exactly know what it is but have heard awful reviews of it and OH recommended I use XP instead

the thing with the tesco laptop is you can get blue or red for the same price, from dell they charge £30 extra for anything other than black.0
