The Great 'Cheapest Decent Laptop' Hunt

Hubby & I have been reading magazines and websites trying to work out which is the best laptop for us considering our needs and budget but we are none the wiser. Can anyone shed any light as to what we should be looking for and what we should be staying well clear of?
What you need is really down to what you actually need the laptop for, failing that probably the best rule of thumb is the same as any pc system, get one you can afford with as much memory and as large a HDD as you can get. As for reliability I have had two Toshibas and at least 3 Dells, both makes are still going strong (older ones have been passed on/sold to family) I have to say I do prefer the Toshibas, why? I just think they look better.
I wouldn't touch Acer or Fujitsu, mainly through the fact I have had a few Acer products and two friends have bought Acer laptops (against my advice)each failed around 3-4 month after the warranty period, also my son works in IT and they trialed a laptop and desktop, they binned them after less than six months because of the problems they had with them, and lastly, in my experience their support sucks.
The reason I wouldn't touch fujitsu is because there was a spell (I don't know if it's still the same) where their HDD's were failing just after the warranty period ended (12 months, other HDD manufacturers were giving 24 months warranty) and yes at the time I did purchase 2 Fujitsu HDD's and yes they did fail after the warranty period, one around 14 months, to give the other one it's due it lasted around 19 months before failing.0 -

Which is the best value for money or Bang for Buck?
there has been absolutely no price decrease even though these Discount Supermarkets were selling the same pcs 3 months ago and this supposed to be a serious recession hold off after Christmas?

I work for Aldi and these absolutely flew off the shelves yesterday, so you've no chance of them being reduced.0 -

Mine didn't:(. Made a few calls over the last few days and finally got an email today saying they were out of stock and to call their sales line (an 0844 number) so their advisors can help me choose an alternative product. Yeah, right:rolleyes:.
So it's back to haunting this thread and the hotdeals one and hopefully find something decent for under £300.
Hope you find one soon, im sure there will be deals popping up all over!0 -

Out of interest, which laptop did you guys order? I'm looking for one, problem is I want the world at a bargain price, and that's never going to happen:snow_laug:snow_grinClick here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.
All information given by myself is offered informally and without prejudice - if in doubt seek help from a qualified and insured professional0 -
Does anyone know the difference in Sony Vaio AW, AR, BZ and FW series? I know their AW series is replacing their AR series.0

Hi all
This little baby is available through Quidco with 8% cashback and an additional 10% off making it around £330! Not bad for a 3Gb machine. It may be cheaper next week with the VAT reduction!!!!! :j :T0 -
