I decided to be "done" 15 years ago so went to see the GP who got things sorted pretty quickly & I got an appointment for a checkup within 10 days or so... the checkup was just a quick exam to make sure the tubes were easy to get at, there were no problems & I was told I'd receive another appointment within 14 days for the actual op.

I got back from the checkup to find my wife sitting on the patio with something in her hand & a pretty sad expression on her face!

You might have already guessed but the thing in her hand was a pregnancy self test stick &, yep, it had the 2 blue lines

I don't know if things are still the same but at the time they wouldn't go through with a vasectomy during a pregnancy or within 12 months of having a new baby which would have meant us waiting for almost 2 years... so we didn't tell them ;)

Anyway back to the op.... I never felt a thing, nothing! A bit of bruising but no pain at all, I went to work on my m/bike the next day & have never had a problem since! Personally I'd prefer a vasectomy to a dentist visit all day long!

Oh, my op was 3.00 pm & we "tried things out" at around 10.am the following day...not a record but not bad either :)

We use condoms shellsuit and every month before af is due I panic even though I know we use them! Sometimes my AF has even been late because I have worried myself so much, I would love to be able to not have to worry again.

I don't even like to use condoms, 'just incase'.

We're getting married in October then going on honeymoon, so it looks like I'll have to go back on the pill as I can't see him getting the snip before then!

He hates me taking the pill too ~ says I'm a mad woman when I take it :o:rotfl:

Sex at anytime without worrying ~ sounds bloody good to me! :D

    Can't your wife be sterilised??

We've got three kiddies and the youngest two are disabled so we had a discussion about one of us having something done, OH actually threw up at the thought of having a vasectomy so we've decided the best option is for me to be sterilised.

It's a far bigger operation for a woman. Tell your OH to grow some (IYSWIM)!

A question to lads who have done it
    - I actually live about 500m from the hospital. Am I going to be in a good enough state right after the Op to walk home? Or will I need to drive/be picked up for such a short journey?

I had an appointment with my GP with all the "what would you do if your partner dies" questions and he printed off a fact sheet. TBH they could have just done this online with a quick survey.

Got a referral and after a month got the consultation with the specialist. Went through the same questions so another waste of time.

The worst bit is the shaving beforehand, leave plenty of time the day before as it isn't the area you really want to be shaving in a hurry!

The surgery itself was a breeze, bit odd going into the room and having to drop your trousers in front of the nurse though! There is a slight sting from the alcohol wipe (or whatever they use) and the anaesthetic needle (one needle on each side) but I do mean slight. Apart from that it was quite a relaxing lie down for half an hour and I had a nice chat with the doctor and nurse. As long as you look at the ceiling not at what the doctor is doing you'll be fine. I honestly found a visit to the dentist or optician worse.

I was absolutely fine walking afterwards. No real pain as such, just a minor discomfort from the hair growing back and because it was about 30C for a week making everything a bit hot and itchy :) On a pain scale of 1 to 10 it would be a 1.

I think you would be fine walking back but everyone is different and there are different ways of doing the surgery, so have a taxi number and cash to hand just in case. The bus arrived just as I left the surgery so I had to do a fast walk and didn't have a problem.

Edit: had to ham it up slightly to get some sympathy from the OH, was looking forward to it hurting in a way to get some pampering :) A large glass of white wine in the evening was a perfect painkiller.

Hubby had his done in February (he's 38, I'm 33). We have 3 small children (4, 2 & 10 months last Feb). Had no problem whatsoever with our doctor sending him for it on NHS.

He was quite uncomfortable afterwards & that wasn't helped when I got a positive pregnancy test 5 days after he had the operation. (Baby number 4 due in October:eek:).
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!
  • Hubby had his 23 years ago. Best thing we ever decided to do.

This is my last post on the matter, windswept, as I guess we will keep going round in circles on this...

I was lucky enough to have 2 beautiful children early on, we have no plans on having any more, but, if in 10 years time there is just one tiny niggling doubt that we made a mistake, that option is there. It's wonderful peace of mind for me. It's not to do with any of the reasons you have mentioned whatsoever. As we are not religious and are intentions are entirely genuine, I cannot see anything morally or ethically wrong with it. We are certainly not the only ones amongst our group of friends to have done the same thing.

Both procedures were done seperately. We never knew and were told it was not allowed/ advised. OH gave his sperm sample at a private clinic and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

I am happy to talk to you in pm if you wish but I won't be adding anything else here.

You've been very tolerant by explaining all that you have. The other party should realise its absolutely none of their business, I'm sure you have very clear and correct reasons for doing things the way that you did and I dont believe that you should have to explain or justify your self.

I'm 27 with 3 kids and am having mine in September. My GP tried talking me out of it and even said "what if your youngest baby dies next week?" :-o I am quite adament though and he's referred me to the hospital. Bit nervous about it.

A question to lads who have done it - I actually live about 500m from the hospital. Am I going to be in a good enough state right after the Op to walk home? Or will I need to drive/be picked up for such a short journey?

    Get a lift.

Seriously. Walking is not comfortable. Bruising is common. My OH had to walk back to the car and it was VERY uncomfortable for him.

Immediately post vasectomy is not the time to start experimenting with your thresholds of testicular pain.
"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."
  • My OH is due to have a vasectomy in september so this thread interests me :D

I'm surprised at how quick they offered my OH the snip. He went to the doc 3 weeks ago and they offered it for 4 weeks after he went to see the doc  he said no as he is unable to get time of work until september. No councilling (sp) or anything. Literally 2 appointments, 1 with the doc and the other with the doc whos doing the vasectomy. Is that normal?, he is 29 btw and we is sure we don't want anymore but imo they shouldn't offer them that quick

    sorry to ramble on :o

A GP appointment then one with the consultant is what I had. I can't see why counselling is required, for me it would have been a complete waste of time...what on earth would you expect them to talk about at counselling?

How can 4 weeks be too short? I can understand a couple of days as a cooling off period but how long do you think you need? As this thread is shown there are more undesired consequences from waiting too long.
