I was told that the free delivery should basically constitute kerbside delivery only, so if you got more than that, you have done well! You can only really carry one at a time due to the size, but fortunately our drive has a slight slope towards the garage, and these rolls roll quite well!
  • B&Q were selling insulation yesterday for £1 if you bought 6, 6 rolls for £1 each

But what size were they? I read somewhere that someone had bought 8 B&Q rolls and took them home in his car - no way could you do this with the npower rolls unless your car was a transit ;)

  • Hi. Sorry for the REALLY late reply.

The only reason to remove old lost insulation is if it's in such a mess (i.e. in piles or different heights) that laying on top of it would result in an uneven surface.

Price depends on the size of the house and the current insulation. If the old insulation has been layed the wrong way (i.e. across the beams instead of between them) then it means that all the old insulation has to be cut and pushed between the beams, which takes a while.

For the average 3 bed semi detached without tanks and pipes and with OK existing insulation i'd say £30 to £50 was good for most fitters (yep, fitters get paid a lot less than you think). (average of 30 to 50 square metres).

Bungalows are an odd one. Much more wiring and pipes to avoid, and way more meterage. Say an average of 70 square metres, no pipes or tanks, 50 to 70 quid.

    Hope that helps someone.

that's great stuff, thanks. Two questions:

    - do you do private jobs? If so please send me a message with where you are in the UK and whether you are interested in doing the work
    - alternatively can you recommend what I should be paying someone to lay my insulation for me (I have a 2 bed house with some insulation already up there). I'm on a low income which is why I bought the insulation on this special offer. I want to pay a fair price but don't want to be ripped off!

I have had a few quotes and some of them have said I need to have the old insulation removed first. Is this right?

    Many thanks,

    Martin

That's unusual. Most rolls these days come 'scored'. They can be split across the score, in either thirds, halves or very thin slivers (slivers are in one area in the middle). Sawing isn't usually required.

Well my 18 rolls arrived on Thursday when I was out, they phoned me and I told them to leave it at the side of the house, what a surprise when I got home, the rolls are much bigger than I had imagined.

I've fitted double layers on top of the existing insulation today, done at least a third of the room and it's only taken four rolls so I'm going to have a lot left over, they are so heavy to carry up ladders too !

Laying them is easy and there's little or no dust coming off them even when using a saw to cut the rolls in half, I did wear a cheap suit though so no itching at all. All I have to do now is clear out the rubbish from the rest of the loft before I can lay the rest of it.
  • Hi. It's itchy because by the look of most of the pictures, it's rock wool.

Rock wool has a high percentage of fibre-glass (some of it's 95 percent). It's the glass fibres that get in your skin and cause you to itch. Nice eh!

Most insulation compaines use Knauf insulation these days. It's only about 5 percent fibre-glass and 95 percent mineral wool (man made wool). Much nicer to work with.

    Horrible, horrible job!!!!!!!!!
I wish I hadn't offered to help, still itchy now.
One loft done and one to go.
Loads spare, it goes a long way.
