yeah microdirect have been reselling refurbs for years - they do it with dell pcs too.

If you go back 15 months and again last summer Wall Street analysts were predicting that Apple had huge stocks of unsold ipods and some of their Minis. This and the Apple site sales are probably some of that inventory. One of their problems is the innovation cycle - they bring out new models to stimulate demand and to get current users to upgrade but they don't really match production to sales all that well.

what sort of quality should you expect - a few or many scratches for example?

They will be spotless - these will have the innards of the first batch, that were returned with duff screens, but will be in new cases with screens that aren't as soft as playdough.

Not necessarily - usually refurb stuff is very good but there are cases where quite bad scratches are found on items. I have an immaculate iPod but I read of a Macbook owner with a badly scratched product.
