I agree with what Browntoa says. The decision was made because of ABUSE, that's it.

Can't help but disagree slightly icon11.gif- abuse was a big reason for sure, but pressure from manufacturers, IMHO, MUST be a contributing factor. If it was just because of abuse fullstop then there wouldn't have been any need to ban the branded coupons would there?.

I suppose it depends on your definition of "abuse". Some would say that using MOCs, without buying the product IS ABUSE.

I guess you're talking about "abuse of the policy" not "abuse of MOCs"
Let's be honest - OK, many MOC users, me included, did not abuse the Tesco policy, but have for months and months ABUSED COUPONS. We can all read, it tells you to buy the product on the bit of paper. The mumplusone website says one coupon per household - we all ignored it and have used Cif x2, domestos x2 etc time and time again. I raised my concerns a couple of times and was either ignored or told not to worry.

Sorry, I'm getting a bit heavy, better go and make a cup of tea. icon11.gificon9.gif

If you are so incensed that the owner of a free site which has saved you money and continues to run without donations or advertising has given information on money saving to the general public (which if I'm not mistaken, is the aim of this site anyway), then how about you pony up and create a site yourself? I'd estimate you'd probably only need a few thousand a month to keep a site the size and breadth of this one running. Good luck!

I sometimes dispair at the ingratitude and 'me, me, me, screw everyone else' attitudes I see on these boards.

You miss the point though. Yes any matters like new ways to claim unfair charges etc should be broadcast to the masses. However many things on here are, to use Martin's own terminology, 'loopholes'. They are policies or offers which are not widely advertised, or are very limited in supply. When anyone complains about these being broadcast outside MSE or sites like PTS we get accused of 'me,me'me' attitude. NO. We put them on these sites for the relatively small number of keen bargain hunters to all enjoy. A few thousand from the population of 60+ million.

Policies like 'one per coupon up to full value of shop' are not advertised by Tesco as it is obvious to anyone with a tiny brain that they don't want everyone doing that. They do however want the big bargain hunters, the shopping tarts if you like, to shop with them. A few thousand out of the millions. Another example was the £8 Oxygene fragrance with 500 points.... not a loophole per se but a hell of a good offer but clearly limited to low stocks. However Martin went on national TV and told millions, end result very few people on here could then find them.

Yes this is a fairly exclusive site. Only a few thousand (or a few hundred) are hardcore regular visitors scouring for offers. Ditto PTS, Ditto UKHotDeals. Many of these offers can be hard for us to find without blabbing to the masses.

Most of us aren't 'me,me,me' but 'US,US,US'. We join these sites, we participate, we post news of glitches and loopholes and excellent but limited supply offers for the benefit of our relatively exclusive groups of keen members, we don't write to the Sun or phone GMTV to announce them.

It does stick in my throat Martin that you don't realise that some things shouldn't be broadcast to tens of millions of people.

I have only been in a lidl once and that was many years ago (it is only 6 miles from where I live). My impression then was it didn't have a lot of choice. This has obviously changed. There is one being built near me just up the road from my large Tesco. I have just looked at Trikers link and will definately pay it a visit when it's built this side of christmas. I have bookmarked this link for future reference.

I have just come back from Asda, I must admit it felt strange not using coupons. I did get some bargains so that helped.

2 months ago I noticed on Martin's home page that Virgin credit card was allowing people to transfer balances at 0% and interest free for 16 months. I applied and was accepted. I wouldn't have known about this offer if MSE wasn't there to help us save money.

Went to Tesco today who wouldn`t take any coupons so left and went to Asda who did.

As each supermarket watches their rivals like hawks, it may be just a question of time before Asda will only accept them if you actually buy the product.

Must say printing off loads of £6-89 pedigree chum vouchers and bombarding Tesco with them is 100% ABUSE.

Asda do accept coupons if you buy the products, infact any supermarkets even tesco.

I don't totally agree with some of the previous posts saying that this is freebie MSE site, in that case can some expert tell me what is this?

Guides: Online Shopping | Cashback Sites Shopping Comparison Sites: Kelkoo* | Pricerunner* | Shopping* Cashback Sites: TopCashBack* | Quidco | wepromiseto* | CashbackKings* Free Tools: Mega Shopbot | Cashback Sites Maximiser.

If I am not mistaken MSE is like quidco or Rpoints that I am using, you click their website, MSE earns commission.

LINKS THAT HELP THIS SITE (all have a * in above article)
(this has no impact on product or pick - see explanation below)

Cashbackkings, Giveortake, Greasy Palm, Quidco, Rpoints, Rpoints Easy Points Section, TopCashBack, Wepromiseto
    Explanation (of * links)
How this site is funded. Two types of contacts are listed. The first, which all have a * within the main body of the articles, help MoneySavingExpert.com stay ad-free and free to use, as they're ‘affiliated links' which invisibly take you usually via affiliate linkage or commercial money sites, which then pay this site. The second type doesn't help and therefore doesn't have a *. You shouldn't notice any difference, the links don't impact the product at all and the editorial line (the things we write) is NEVER impacted by the revenue. If it isn't possible to get an affiliate link for the best product, it is still included in exactly the same way. For more details read

martin, i am astounded that someone with your supposed intelligence would think it was ok to broadcast this to millions on national tv. many people rely on this policy to get by, especially in the recession. fortunately, you do not live on the breadline and use coupons to survive, unfortunately, you didn't think of your loyal members who do. i think this will hit many hard, especially with christmas coming up.
