  • Thanks for replying so quickly - I can repay the ovd, but use if for sons expenses - football etc and pay in child benefit. Unfortunatley at the moment, we have paid out too much!!! I like the way it works at the moment and dont want to change it, but this is extortionate and I refuse to pay these charges. I will close the account. Both me and OH are ex staff, he is retired, so it may be that they wont apply to us because we carry staff indicators but if not, I am voting with my feet!!!

Thanks again for the info - Lilo

Hey Hypno - if she hasn't already got one, get your daughter a Lonely Planet Mandarin phrasebook for her trip. It is far superior to all the other ones out there and will be very useful.

Also, I'm assuming that she will be eating at OK restaurants as it's a school trip, but some people like to take their own chopsticks with them to restaurants. Just a thought. I never had any problems, though.

Also, it will be blinking cold over there (depending on where she is going): make sure she has bedsocks as well as all the rest.

40km north of Auckland, where are you?

Darwin, NT - for my sins!

Wow llamahead not sure whether to say lucky you or bad luck lol. We did think about emigrating to australia when we were deciding where to emigrate to, but would have only gone as far north as brisbane. I don't think I could cope with how hot it gets up there!

how did you end up there and sorry for the hijack hypno

    Morning all....

pickle, DD's Godfather frequently works in China, and has lent her lots of guide books - I will make sure she takes the Lonely planet one with her!

lilo - I have just my child benefit paid into the halifax too, so the costs would be extortionate in relation to what actually goes in....another reason to say "no thanks" to the OD, although I will keep the account open as it is useful in my bigger scheme of things!

50p on a scratch brings me a little step closer to payout......OH got paid from his second job which is a very welcome sight, but other than that, nothing to report......On Friday, when I get paid, I can start to make the real changes to the budgets and the way we work them, and I am looking forward to that!

Nothing else to report.......I need to see if my casino bonus has been credited today, and if I can, to withdraw that......and am still waiting for a couple of small b!ngo wins to be sent to my bank account......none of them big, but all very welcome.

Hope you all have a good day x

Morning - caught up again on about 4 pages !!!!

Have been knitting (!) Pudsey Bears over the last couple of days - 1 finished, 1 half done !

Anyway DS is back tonight till Thursday morning - he booked to come home for T.A. - they owe him £900 in back pay - whether he will ever get it remains to be seen with the cut-backs announced.

Banking all checked - money from teaching in but thats it - have to say I have never ever been overdrawn so have never had charges - which in the great scheme of things is very lucky - but I did work for one of the big 4 )as they were then) back in the 70's / 80's and it was a sackable offence for a staff member to go O/D!

Anyway - work beckons - have not risked swimming for two weeks because of my eyes

    Have a good one

I hope DS manages to get that back pay owed, surfbabe - £900 is a lot of money to be without!

Any idea how long it will be before you can swim again? Or is it just a case of try it and see?

Good morning Hypno and co, hope today is a good one! Currently on sick leave so cash will be tight running up to Christmas - opportunity for some serious moneysaving and careful shopping though, so mustn't complain. Like Surfbabe, I worked years ago for one of the big 4 banks, and certainly, if you wanted an OD you got the Spanish Inquisition from the branch manager. Also, every day, the manager or his deputy went through looking at any staff account cheques that had come through the clearing that day. If you wanted to pay anything into your account the paying in slip had to be initialled by the manager or deputy before processing. Also all staff bank statements came to the branch and the manager went through them. Very Big Brotherish, but maybe we have gone too far the other way now, judging by the mess so many people get in!
And just try getting a mortgage in the old days - grilling by the bank manager, pound of flesh and pint of blood wanted etc. Now there are banks around who will still lend up to 5 times people's salaries for a mortgage, no wonder we are in a mess today! Ah well, hindsight is a marvellous thing! I've just realised I'm on my soapbox again... I'll get me coat........

Lol Nargleblast - have you seen the news this week that banks may actually HAVE TO LOOK TO SEE IF A CUSTOMER CAN AFFORD REPAYMENTS ON A MORTGAGE

I remember having to have interviews with the bank manager and my statements queried before I was granted my first mortgages......and I have to say that I am quite pleased that it is getting back to that - proof of deposit, for example.

I know people will say that first time buyers won't be able to afford to get on the housing ladder, but that was always the way.......we just scrimped and saved for our one bed starter home deposit, couldn't afford carpets for the first year, and didn't have a fridge for the first six months.

Unfortunately, in recent years when mortgages have been easy to come by, home buyers have not HAD to save deposits, and not had to prove that they can afford the repayments when rates change.....and that has lead to many a problem.

So, I for one am all in favour of the old fashioned way of doing it. Even if it does mean I have to save longer before I can move into my dream house!
