If people sensibly handed over £2 or £3 coupons per visit then thats fine but when some hardcore scroogers hand over £50 + then I can see why they stopped it. Tesco's only gets 1p per coupon handling charge - they lose £50 in till and can only claim back say £55 in a months time. Business sense..... no way.

Stop grumbling, get a life and move on. :silenced:

Wish I could find somewhere with an "investment" return as good as this.

£50 now or £55 in a month - now let me see - - a full 10% return in just a MONTH

Sounds perfect business sense to me ...

... the only issue is when 10% or more of the coupons taken are then worthless.

Out of date, for use in other named stores, those that specifically exclude Tesco, against products not stocked anywhere nationwide, etc. etc. ....

... which I suspect is the main reason for this change, and this continual, excessive and purposeful misuse caused by a portion of society (some appear to frequent MSE - and even be proud of being "con-artists") who would willing hand over forged fivers & tenners (and not really think they had done anything wrong) if they thought there was a reasonable chance they'd get away with it.

My Tesco stopped taking as from 3pm today.
    I only had 1 50p coupon and a £68 shop, so wasn't bothered.............today.
I will now start shopping around a bit more.
The guy on the till pointed to a printed sign stating the policy as of 3pm today and said all stores will be doing it.
He didn't say if it was a trial or not though.
He did say they started it today because they 'got wind' of a voucher in this weekend newspaper for another store??

OMG !! was great while it lasted, I am going to have to be a better budgeter now
  • it is classed as a trial at the moment , greatly due to the level of coupons used this week
  • I spoke to the Regional Head of Security in our area after walking in our Mr T's and seeing all the signs. He said Martlin Lewis had killed the golden goose as once he had announed what was potentionally an illegal practice of redeeming coupons against other products Tesco solicitors had to get involved due to manufacturers saying they might file law suits against Mr T and at 3pm today the decision had to be taken to act quick or face multiple law suits.

I am very annoyed as I have just bought about £500 of coupons, proper ones, that's bought price not redeemable value. Shall I put a claim in the small claims court against Martin Lewis to get my £500 back or return the sellers on eBay as not suitable? Tesco has told me it is ML that has caused this not the scammers.

I agree there are too many people scanning and copying coupons illegally and gangs raiding the shops and this should be stopped. But the bottom line is that if the fact you can use coupons had never ever appeared on MSE there would be 95% less scammers, far less people overall using coupons and the longevity of this practice would have been ensured for a long time to come.

TBH, Sounds like the stores have beef with Martin for other issues (maybe reminding us of our customer rights aside from this issue?) and they have heaped some bad press onto him. Tescos will change back the coupon policy, but may reword it- as long as other stores take coupons, (even if its only when you buy the item which seems fair enough to me) then Tescos will be losing out, they are too greedy to let that happen, so give them time, they will accept coupons again- but probably with more efficient rules on what you can use.

I don't think Martin did anything here but tell us what you can do. (I have to say I did not watch the show). Abusing or over using coupons is not something he forced anyone to do and if he found a loop hole and mentioned it, fair play. But a little brain power would have told people that if they abuse it, they ruin it for everyone in the long run.

Martin Lewis is there to tell you how you can save money, he's not also there to remind you of your ethics and your common sense.
  • I kind of feel as if I have no right to 'butt in' due to just joining, but I have used the odd coupon here and there, but not often as I live too far from Tesco etc.

It has been confirmed that Tesco did stop them as a direct result of the gmtv appearance. It may be a dig from them, who knows?

However, it is surely a fact that it was never going to do the regular couponers a favour to expose a practice which is pretty borderline and has often been abused by regular mse'rs as well as the lurkers like me?

Ooops, that sounds like I abused them!

I personally sat and cringed at the show....gm.tv/videos/money/38881-money-man-martin-lewis.html

does anyone not see the irony re, most - if not all - complainers against the gmtv appearance have presumably found out where to get the coupons from this site, ie. on the newspapers thread etc. and been given advice about how to use on this site.

Unfortunately it's symptomatic of the culture of self, self, self. "I want to work the system and save heaps of money but I don't want anyone else to."
