    Hi Hypno!
Welldone getting out there, I am sure you will soon pick up a bit more if you can find a nice training plan......and a race maybe?

    SHWA,
Hi there. I would suggest that the slower and more controlled your approach the more likely to continue, your plan seems sensible, So try and get ready for a Park Run (google it to find out more!) or a nice 10km race later in the year. Once you have a date in the diary you can look up a good training package to suit your life and ambition.

After your 10k you can look to doing a couple of half marathons in 2011, and by then you will have a really good idea on your ability and the training needed to get through a marathon.

If you decide to go for a marathon in 2011, then you certainly have time to do it, you would be amazed what you can achieve, but dont make it the reason to start with, just start off nice and easy, and make sure at this stage you enjoy your running!

My marathon went very very well. It was tough, as was expected but my training got me through. I ran the whole way round without stopping, and beat my target....just!

    WELL DONE Mascott!! :T:T:T:T:T:T

I bet you're really chuffed! How are the muscles today? A woman at work ran the marathon yesterday and her poor feet are battered...Ouch!

Drinking more water seems to be helping me with the stitch problem, someone also said bananas help so I'm trying that too. Went for a run Saturday morning, before breakfast, which was better but I struggled a bit because it was really warm.

Back out tonight, maybe I'm more of a night owl runner :)

    Cheers Lurkio and Vic

I am struggling with stairs today, but I aim to be back out by the end of the week:eek:

Vic, dont take on too much water just around run time, but just try and keep your intake up so your pee is clearish, that way you are hydrated and during the run you will cope as the hydration drops off. Bananas are good.....

Hows things Lurkio? Managed a few runs....?

ok - taking it a bit easier... not pushing myself too much. New PB on Saturday :) - going for a longer slow run tomorrow (4 miles +, I think). I think my body will tell me when to go out again after that :rotfl:

    Well Done mate, good one!
Sounds like if you keep listening to your body you should be on target for a good 10k.....

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Hi all, not posted here for a while. Just popped back to see who's around. Great to see new posters and people just starting out. Well done, I hope you are all enjoying your running and seeing (and feeling) the benefits. I used to be on here quite a lot but I had lots going on and lost interest in posting, but not in running!

If you are new to running, keep at it. When it first seems hard and you feel like you will never break through, stick at it. You will surprise yourself.

Someone had a question about breathing - I never breathe in through my nose when I'm running, it feels like it 'slows' my breathing down if you know what I mean. I just breathe in and out through my mouth and it seems all right for me. I usually settle into a nice rhythm of breathing in for two paces and out for two paces and this helps to regulate my breathing and steady my pace.

    Hi Chickadee

And it obviously works as you can see by the VLM time!!

    How was it....?
I was very happy with my performance, and I know I ran it well, and couldnt have run much faster. I would love to aim for 4.15, but thats quite a big jump for next year! (fingers crossed!)........I also found that once you start slowing slightly that you have to just hold on, and that it was impossible to pick it up. I said that even if I had to make up 20 seconds to get in under 4.30 it would have been impossible.I was at the mercy of my legs!

I intend to focus on a few halfs, but mainl I just cant wait for those lovely faster, shorter runs again......

I am also doing the Oxford 10k next month, but as I have been plodding for months, running faster might be a shock.

Actually, running again looks a long way off, as I just cant walk yet!
I am already bored and I want to get out there! I am wearing running shorts/top today, but I am going to be sitting in the garden!!

I am trying to persuade Mrs Mascott to sign up for VLM2011........shes thinking about it!

    Afternoon!

Thanks for water tip Mascott, stopped drinking around an hour before I went running and felt much better, seem to help with the stitch problem as well.

FINALLY hit the 5 mins running, I seem to struggle at doing the longer time for a week or so then it finally clicks!! :j So I'm now comfortably doing 5 mins running / 3 mins walking for 31 mins (with warm up). Will do this again on Weds then will go onto the 8 mins run / 5 mins walking on Friday and see how I get on.

Really starting to feel the benefits and enjoy myself! :T There were times when I never thought that would happen.

One problem I am having, when I'm running my calves feel fine but as soon as I stop to start walking the tense up and feel really tight - is this normal? Should I be doing more stretches before? Feels a little bit like cramp.

Chickadee - thanks for the breathing tip, know what you mean about slow breathing. Just trying to get a better rhythm so it doesn't feel like I'm panting!!

Hope you all have a good day! Enjoy the sunshine
