I am absolutely gutted to tell you that I'm not going to be able to do the marathon next week, I'm still ill despite feeling better for a couple of days I have a cough, bad sinuses and generally feeling run down. Even if it improves over the weekend I won't have been out for 2 weeks and still wouldn't have enough to give.
I'm really pleased with my training progress and know this goal will be achievable for me next year, my hubbie is going to do Snowdon with me. I have another week at work then have a week off for half-term so hopefully I'll be back to full health by then and can get out for a few runs before my hubbie goes away for 2 weeks.
I'm going to concentrate on the shorter distances for a while and bring down my times, oh and to kick start a new plan I need a new pair of trainers (a good excuse to go shopping but my old ones have seen enough miles anyway:D)
So will be looking for 5 and 10km in the North Wales/North West region and am looking forward to getting back out there!

Aah Evab (hugs). So sorry to hear your news. Really gutting for you but glad to know you won't let the training 'go to waste' and will get out there and do shorter runs.
What about doing a half, if there's one locally or not too far away from home?
You are doing the right thing re your health. There will always be other marathons, but I sympathise with you not doing the one you've trained for :sad:

It was no more an elite sport than it is now, everyone was eligible to enter.
But, unlike football where people compete at all levels and competitiveness (and hence standards) has increased, the opposite has happened in running.
I've not got access to the comparisons for New York, but to illustrate the point these are comparisons for London 1985 and London 2009:
Posn 1000: 1985 2:43:35, 2009 3:00:19 +16:44
Posn 2000: 1985 2:54:39, 2009 3:13:05 +18:26
Posn 3000: 1985 3:02:12, 2009 3:22:01 +19:49
Posn 4000: 1985 3:10:34, 2009 3:29:04 +18:30
Posn 5000: 1985 3:17:57, 2009 3:35:19 +17:22
So during a period when the world record has improved, in London the typical 2009 runner is the best part of 3 whole miles behind their equivalent 1985 counterpart. Interesting!
I wasn't suggesting it was just the size of the field, I was just curious as to how much that affected it. From those times it is clear there has been a considerable drop in general standards. The 1000th placed runner this year would have placed somewhere between 2000 and 3000 in 1985, almost certainly closer to 3000th.Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0 -
Oh no, evab! Poor thing. I'm sure you'll bounce back stronger, though. You've got the determination. xRunning Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0

Hi, hope everyone's doing OK.
Aw Evab, that's such a shame, you've put so much effort in, but the right decision if you don't feel well enough. Hope you're feeling better soon.
I'm only managing little plods at the moment - health/ time/ my overwhelming urge to hibernate in Winter aren't helping - but determined to keep going. Off to check out the Aldi stuff tonight, especially the fetching yellow jacket, so I can actually be seen in the dark!Debt@16.12.09 £10,362.38, now debt free as of 29.02.2012."I cannot make my days longer so I strive to make them better."0 -
