Hi, Can I join this thread, I'm planning to do Cardiff half marathon in October (a long way off I know) but running's never been my thing, but seeing as I have just hit the big 30, want to achieve a few things as well as clear my debts! I have yet to start training, but have a partner in crime who I can train with!
Any tips / advice about a training plan, the right trainers will be grateful for!

The garmin 405 canvas strap (ideal for smaller wrists) ordered from Garmin comes with two straps a small one and a regular sized one so my punt paid off. It doesnt look as good as the standard strap but at least I should have to buy another no for the duration of the watches life.
Went to running club last night did 4m (2 at 8:40ish pace) then my calves locked up, I guess this is because of Sundays race and probably should have done a recovery run on Monday but didnt because I thought the rest would be better. So I thought maybe I should have couple of days rest and LSR on Friday but my legs feel good now so maybe I'll do a gentle 4m later. Oh sage Rich do you have any words of wisdom in this situation?
Its simple - do what feels right!:D
If you can feel your achilles tightening up, for example, and becoming 'twangy' (I'm sure thats not a word but you know what I mean:p) then you are at high risk of injury so running would be just plain daft.
However, if the legs just feel heavy but otherwise you've got full range of movement then its probably beneficial to get out for a loosener as early as possible.
But the overriding thing to bear in mind is that your legs have just been into territory they've never been before so they are bound to react in some way and caution is paramount.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

We'd rather see someone set their sights on a goal several months ahead than come on asking how they can prepare from scratch for a marathon next week.:D
30!! I'm not sure you're old enough to join the thread yet (Oh no, hold on, I think we have let the odd youngster slip in under the net:p).
First things first - get out there and see where you're at now in terms of comfortable running. If its 1 mile fine, or maybe less....it doesnt matter but you need to establish a starting point before knowing what training would be appropriate.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Hello Ever - glad to hear you are thinking ahead for October
What kind of running are you doing now if any? This will help us tell you what to do next
Trainers wise - get to a good shop and get them to suggest what works for you - they may do a gait analysis or just get you to run up and down the street and do it by eye0 -
Run club for me tonight :T
6.5 miler today.
...Linda xxIt's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.0 -
Everhopeful09 welcome.

Morning all. Bad (but not disastrous) news from me. Sprained my ankle playing football yesterday lunchtime and it's worse today. So as I'm away this weekend I'm just going to write the rest of the week off! It should be OK again for Monday to launch right back into it.
It has forced the decision I knew I would have to make and I will give up football until after the Blackpool marathon. I pick up so many little knocks and bruises that could be so much worse, that I just can't take the risk of injury anymore. So I'm kind of glad of this small injury as a wake up call!
As for the discussion on speed improvement, the only "speed" session I do is the Saturday 5k parkruns. And my 5k pace has improved by more than a minute in recent months. The main difference in training has been more (and further) distance runs. So as keeps cropping up, why not keep building distance and don't worry about speed work until your natural speed improvement from these sessions starts to plateau?Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0 -
Hope the ankle gets better soon BT
Just seen this on facebook:
We have three Gold Bond places available for the Virgin London Marathon on the 25th April 2010. There is still plenty of time to train and fundraise; if you would like to run for the XXXX in this exciting event then please call or email as soon as possible
OMG :eek::eek: What are they doing thats just ruddy irresponsible!

...and welcome Everhopeful09. As others have said, let us know where you are with your running. Are you a complete newbie? No problem if you are. If you are, tons of walking is a great way to strengthen your legs ahead of starting to run. But we can advise more after your reply.Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0
