It seems one of my three pairs of trainers is on 627 miles, another 400 and my newest pair is on 339.

Will have to get a new pair soonish then :(

I'm getting some stuff in Bradford on Saturday in my favourite running shop :)

(Rich will be proud of you using your trainers to extinction!)

You should see one of the guys in our club, the last cross country we did before Christmas he ran in these horrendous old things with the sole falling off and his toes were poking out of the end :rotfl:
    ...Linda xx
It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

  • Becky,

Yeah I know I know....I thought that on the way round, but I just couldnt stop myself.

Rich, out of interest what is the thought about how long to use your shoes. I have two pairs about 3 months old so I am fine.....just wondered really.

I am thinking of getting an MOT from the Dr. Just cholesterol/bloods and lung function test. My O2 levels are always a tad low, so I thought I would see what they think.

I am just as bad Mascott but was trying to 'do as I say not as I do' - doesnt really suit me does it :p

I wear my shoes until I can 'feel' the benefit from them has gone - it sort of works up after a few weeks of them being 'dead'...not sure how to describe that really...

The current thinking, which I totally agree with (but dont tell the shoe companies:p), is that you should strip out as much support/protection as you can get away with for several reasons:

    1. It helps you to home in on your natural running style, not an artificial style only made possible by lots of heel cushioning.

    2. It strengthens the ankles and the various connective tissues, thereby reducing the chances of weakness injuries.

    3. The body was not designed to run with shoes on at all. Remember that the Olympic marathon has been won barefooted!!!!!

Therefore, as already mentioned, I wear shoes down to the bare minimum for them to still be held together. If there's a hole or two at the foot strike points they're still good for a few more miles.:D:D

    Phew great running everyone!

Good run today simply, how did you feel following your 20miler on Sunday?

UK I hope you’ve got a pillow ready for after your adventures!

Good running mascot, take it easy on that knee.

    Well done kms, nice going!

Well done Linda, you’ll find you’ll love your new trainers and will be bouncing along.

Rich I’ve said before about the lack of activity many of the kids I know actually do, was quite pleased recently when I discovered there was a local athletics club for kids. My kids will be going as soon as they’re old enough. When the weather is better we’re going to taking them out to support our training so they can see what we do. Just a little fun down the field but enough to wear them out :D

Hahaha Ev that cartoon is sooooo true - I had to tell the sales boy in Nike in Covent Garden what lunar racers were for - he tried to sell me the lunar trainer (a fashion shoe not a running shoe)

Felt good thanks ev; loads better than after the 18 I did last week - I think that taking a break from speed work is helping. Just means I'm going to stay a slow coach forever though :(

My grandson loves coming to watch me race and is happy to spend hours cheering everyone on (I'm sure he's not just there for what he can get out of my goody bag although he has enjoyed the odd treat :D) - I'm hoping it will encourage him to get involved when he's a bit older.

kms - I'm intrigued by your ability to eat during endurance races. Have you 'always' been able to do this or is it something you've trained yourself to do?

Simply you are getting faster anyway as the stamina work beds down - it was always going to be tough to do mileage and speed work so dont feel bad :)

I am currently doing no speedwork except my 5k races and have had two rest days this week (again :p)...but thats the thing with mileage you can only do what your body can handle at once and then it has to settle again...you've still got plenty of improvement to come :D
